Count Scrabster ultimately let out a groan and closed his eyes. He hadn’t lost consciousness, but he was utterly spent, completely unable to move.

Marquis Mattele spoke.

“Is the information certain?”

“Yes, it is. Soldiers are currently transporting the body to the royal palace.”

At that moment, Matiel interjected.

“There’s no need for that. Why should we transport the filthy corpse of a traitorous rebel to the palace?”

“Duke Elinak, but still…”

“Duke Elinak.”

Marquis Mattele stepped forward as if shielding the officer. Though his tone was stern, his expression was not. Like Count Scrabster, he too looked as though he simply wished to collapse and close his eyes.

“I’ll handle it. First, we must confirm whether the body is genuine, so proceed with the transport for now. However, if it is indeed confirmed to be Adonion’s remains, they cannot be allowed into the royal mausoleum.”

“Of course.”

“In that case, however difficult it may be, we must obtain Princess Feriera’s explicit command. Though Adonion was her elder brother, he was, above all else, a criminal who attempted regicide. Thus, this matter rightly falls under Princess Feriera’s jurisdiction.”

Matiel remained silent. He didn’t readily agree, but neither did he stubbornly obstruct the plan. Knowing Matiel’s temperament well, the Marquis found this degree of reaction sufficiently reassuring.

“I’ll take care of the minor details. Once the Count regains some strength, he’ll assist as well. As for you—you’re injured. Return home and rest immediately. If you miss this opportunity for treatment, you might suffer for the rest of your life. Consider this advice from a superior.”

There was even a faint trace of amusement in his final words. Though it was a weary sort of laugh, Charlotte couldn’t coldly reject such consideration from the Marquis, who was usually as fastidious and selective as herself. Had she been at full strength, perhaps she might have—but in truth, Matiel was clinging on by sheer willpower alone.
