Maleblanc’s voice was as cold and ominous as the black smoke they had seen. His lower jaw trembled uncontrollably. He clenched his teeth so hard his mouth went numb, but that only made his whole face shudder violently.

His survival instinct—the natural urge every living being possesses—screamed at him to flee this place.

With every breath, the area near his heart felt increasingly hotter. Maleblanc flexed his fingers in and out with the relaxed, leisurely attitude of a champion entering a game meant for amateurs. His chalk-white skin shimmered faintly under the moonlight, looking eerie and unnatural.

“Your expression doesn’t look very good.”

He spoke. Charlotte stiffened, tensing every muscle in her body to stop herself from instinctively stepping backward.

She was utterly dumbfounded that dominance could shift so swiftly. Even before he recovered his strength and reappeared, they’d barely managed to fend off attacks flooding in from all directions—but at least back then, there had been a sliver… a glimmer of hope. Perhaps they could drain him completely if they pressed on.

But that fragile hope vanished without a trace the moment Adonion killed Largo. Having drunk the blood of a Vandrop, Maleblanc now brimmed with fresh, vibrant energy—as if just awakened from a long slumber.

“The daughter of Barrett and an Elinak. A feast truly worth waiting for.”

Matiel inhaled sharply and straightened his body. Though his stance—holding a sword in one hand—appeared light, it clearly signaled he was ready to strike at any moment. Charlotte assessed what she had left. She no longer possessed anything she could call a weapon. All she had now was her own ability.

But would that ability work this time? Earlier, she’d still had a bit of usable strength left. It was barely more than a shallow puddle at the bottom of an empty bowl, yet she’d managed to draw from it.

Now, however, she’d exhausted every last drop of energy dealing with his illusions. In this state, could she even manipulate the mind of a passing deer—let alone him?
