Charlotte fell silent for a moment, lost in thought as if trying to understand his words.

“So… you mean you knew Miss Lina intended to find Maleblanc and that she needed this machine for it, so you cooperated with her?”

“You’re quick to understand, Miss Barrett.”

“And it wasn’t you who caught the creature—it was your cat.”

“That’s correct.”

Suddenly, the image of the cat she’d seen at the Grimmel mansion flashed through her mind—the one whose eyes changed color and spoke… Perhaps Little’s cat was precisely that creature. It wasn’t an urgent matter right now, though.

Charlotte spoke.

“I understand what the two of you are discussing. But whether this machine is needed immediately—that, I can’t guarantee. Because…”

Before she could finish, the sound of approaching footsteps mingled with murmuring voices reached them. Charlotte had hoped it was Matiel, but her expectation was dashed. Not only was it not Matiel—it was the very person she least wanted to see at that moment. It was unexpected.

“I’ve come to fetch you, Miss Charlotte.”

Charlotte’s and Lina’s eyes briefly met. Little, acting as though he weren’t even there, had already stepped aside and bowed his head slightly—yet beneath his lowered hood, the curve of his lips seemed to form a faint smile. For some reason, it felt like an ominous sign, making Charlotte’s heart even heavier.

“You came to fetch me, Your Highness?”

“Yes. Time is of the essence, so I’d appreciate it if you’d hurry. I’ll explain the details on our way.”

Adonion’s demeanor was different from usual. He behaved as if neither Lina James nor Little even existed. Yet, in the briefest instant, Lina James keenly noticed his glance flicker toward the machine designed to track the creature.
