The alley with the apothecary grew quiet around noon, but things were different once you stepped out toward the square. People coming out for lunch had to gather somewhere, and that place was the square.

Charlotte and Tae Mi entered the old restaurant they had always frequented since childhood.

It was a place they had visited even when Charlotte’s parents were still alive, and whether you called it charmingly antique or stubbornly outdated, its decor had remained unchanged through the years. Now, with signs of patchwork repairs becoming increasingly visible from weathering, the small establishment—barely large enough to seat ten—radiated the weary aura of an old man.

Their lunch consisted of simple potato soup, baked bread, and a couple of vegetables fried in oil. Whether from hunger or not, Charlotte ate faster than usual. If Matiel had been sitting across from her, he would have been inwardly shocked despite showing no outward sign—but Tae Mi didn’t seem to care at all.

Having finished the golden-brown, crispy fried onions in just two bites, Tae Mi suddenly spoke as if remembering something.

“I read it in Luger’s records. When he escaped from that guy’s grasp… he nearly failed, but at the last possible moment, he slashed the man’s shadow and fled.”

Charlotte gave no reply, focusing solely on her soup. At least, that’s how it appeared to everyone else. Her inner turmoil traveled to the tip of her slightly trembling spoon, then vanished into her mouth along with the soup, swallowed down in one gulp.

“I wonder what that could possibly mean.”

Tae Mi said. Charlotte, halfway through scooping another spoonful of soup, suddenly lost her appetite and set the spoon down. She picked up her napkin and absentmindedly dabbed at the corner of her mouth.

“Isn’t it just the plain truth?”

At her words, Tae Mi gave a short, dismissive snort—a laugh that sounded as if he thought she was treating him like a child.

“Vampires don’t have shadows, you know.”

“That’s what people say, but it’s never been officially documented. Sure, there are a few brief notes from people who claimed they saw something like an illusion, but you know as well as I do that most of those note-writers weren’t exactly in their right minds.”

This time, the snort was louder. Tae Mi raised one eyebrow and said,

“So according to your story—”
