Charlotte stopped thinking and yanked Baroness Lireld’s arm.

She followed Charlotte without resistance, but her vivid, chilling smile had faded into an ambiguous expression.

‘Good. She isn’t fully grown yet.’

Charlotte thought—and suddenly felt a wave of relief.

The creature had been greedily feeding off the gathered crowd, growing rapidly, but she’d succeeded in pulling it away at the right moment.

“I haven’t finished talking yet! I still haven’t…!”

The baroness, dragged along unwillingly, began growing heavier. The monster inside her was thrashing in desperation.

When the baroness dug in her heels like a stubborn child, Charlotte nearly got yanked backward herself.

Charlotte pulled harder, and the baroness’s feet, rooted stubbornly to the floor, crumpled the long carpet beneath them.

“I haven’t finished talking yet! I’m going back! I’m going back! I’m going back!”

“Damn it, she’s gone mad.”

Seeing the baroness’s face slowly change as she shrieked at the top of her lungs, Charlotte felt goosebumps crawl up her neck and every hair on her body stand on end.

If left like this, someone would surely come running—and once that happened, the monster would escape Charlotte’s grasp by pretending to still be the baroness….

“I’m going baaaack!”

“Don’t make me laugh.”

Charlotte growled lowly, warningly, and shouldered into the baroness’s body.

Charlotte pinned the baroness down as she staggered and fell from the sudden assault, gripping her shoulders to stop her from wriggling free.

“Let go! Let go! You coward Lotti, you liar Lotti! I hate you! I hate you!”

“Who do you like, then?”

Grinding her teeth, Charlotte pulled a small tincture bottle from her leather pouch.

At the sight of it, Baroness Lireld—or rather, the monster eating away inside her—began thrashing even more violently.

But Charlotte paid no mind. She popped the cork out with her teeth and roughly grabbed the baroness’s jaw with one hand.

“Open your mouth quietly. If you don’t, I’ll make this far more unpleasant for you.”

“Ugh… ugh…! Su…!”

From the hollow opening between her puffed-out lips, the tincture inside the bottle began gushing in like a waterfall.

Unlike ordinary tinctures, it looked like perfectly clear water, yet carried a bitter scent along with a peculiar fragrance.

‘The parasitic monster won’t be able to endure it and will burst out.’

This was a special tincture Charlotte alone could concoct—designed specifically for dealing with monsters.

It harmed no human host, but inflicted excruciating pain on any monster feeding inside one.

Charlotte poured every last drop into the baroness’s mouth, then clamped her hand tightly over her lips.

“Ughh…!”

The baroness’s eyes bulged grotesquely wide, and something inside her tightly cinched stomach began squirming and writhing violently.

Her chest swelled as if someone had forcibly pumped air into her, and her ribcage flared outward.

As soon as Charlotte removed her hand from the baroness’s mouth, the woman vomited out a thick, sticky white substance along with a distinctly unpleasant sound.

Amid the mucus—resembling the trail left by a giant slug—lay something black, glossy, and insect-like.

It curled its legs—six or maybe eight of them—and thrashed about as if sprayed with insecticide.

Charlotte opened a flat case she always carried, trapped the bug inside, then looked down coldly at the gasping baroness.

“Oh my goodness, Madam!”

Good, Charlotte thought. Right on time.

She slipped the case into her pocket with near-invisible speed, then covered her mouth as if about to cry while watching the unconscious baroness and the approaching maid.

“Help! The baroness suddenly collapsed! She was perfectly fine just moments ago…!”

“Madam! Madam! Oh heavens! Madam, please wake up!”

“I’ll go get help right away. Please move the baroness to the nearest room quickly.”

“Yes, miss!”

The maid struggled to sling the fallen baroness over her shoulder and hurried off at a quick pace.

Charlotte heard the sounds of other servants rushing over, heard doors opening and closing… and watched the mucus left on the floor dry into a pale white, then slowly crumble into fine powder and vanish.

Then, as if nothing had happened, she slipped away down the corridor.

She had no intention of gathering people as she’d told the maid. Other servants would’ve already taken care of it—and more importantly, the maid probably wouldn’t even remember Charlotte’s face by the time she turned around.

‘Alright, time to go find Tae Mi…’

Charlotte’s steps halted abruptly mid-stride as she tried to slip through the bustling hall. Someone had grabbed her arm.

“What…?!”

She whipped her head around with a scowl, her brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.

The one holding her arm was, unsurprisingly, Matiel.

“Where are you going? As far as I remember, our agreement isn’t over yet.”

Oh right—I completely forgot about this man, Charlotte grumbled inwardly, eyeing Matiel with feigned surprise.

His gaze wasn’t unfocused, nor did he look awkward or startled upon seeing her.

She had to admit it this time—it was undeniable that her magic simply didn’t work on him.

‘But why? He doesn’t feel like he’s wearing any sort of barrier. Could he be carrying something? Or is it…?’

Matiel, watching Charlotte lost in thought, spoke.

“If you’re wondering how to slip away, let me save you the trouble—it’s pointless. A promise is a promise.”

A promise. Charlotte sighed briefly and rolled her eyes. He was right.

A promise was a promise.

Keeping one’s word mattered to everyone—but especially to someone like Charlotte, a mage.

Although she’d also promised Tae Mi she’d go rescue that merchant’s or newly rich man’s daughter, if forced to choose, honoring her promise to Matiel took precedence.

After all, her relationship with Tae Mi didn’t fall into any ordinary category—like family, friend, or lover.

‘Besides…’

Charlotte couldn’t deny that his help had been crucial in pulling the baroness away at just the right moment.

Though shaking him off rudely suited her temperament better, since she couldn’t subtly escape his sight now, helping him was her only option.

“I’m not running away, so let go of my arm—unless you’re some rogue who grabs any woman he sees.”

Matiel raised one eyebrow and obediently released her. Once Charlotte fully turned to face him, he asked,

“So… what happened to the baroness?”

“She vomited out a monster and collapsed.”

“She’s not in any danger, I hope?”

“I’m not some sloppy amateur, nor am I incompetent. She’ll be perfectly fine. She’ll wake up tomorrow morning feeling wonderfully refreshed.”

As she spoke with a scoff, Matiel quietly held his gaze fixed on Charlotte’s face.

Something seemed to hold his attention—but she couldn’t tell what.

Matiel said, “Good, that’s a relief. Then let’s go catch that thief now.”

“Do you have a plan? A plan to lure out the baron?”

“He’s right over there. See him?”

Charlotte glanced briefly in the direction he pointed with his thumb.

Baron Lireld stood there, constantly rubbing his small head and glancing around nervously.

Whether he knew his wife had just collapsed in the corridor or not, his face was flushed red as he kept gulping down drink after drink.

Charlotte turned back to Matiel.

“He looks quite drunk.”

“Yes. He’s probably frantic and out of his mind with anxiety. If you cooperate, dragging him out won’t be difficult.”

“How exactly do you want me to cooperate?”

At that moment, Matiel’s fingertip pointed directly at the center of Charlotte’s forehead.

Charlotte looked up at him with a displeased expression and lazily flicked his finger away with her hand.

“How rude. Why are you pointing at me all of a sudden?”

“You flicking away my hand is probably the ruder act. Seems you’ve forgotten—I’m a duke.”

“I don’t care if you’re a duke or a prince. I absolutely hate it when people point at me. Do it again, and I’ll make sure you never point carelessly at anyone ever again.”

A faint, mocking smile crossed Matiel’s lips.

“Oh? And how exactly would you do that? Break my finger? I’m not sure those tiny hands of yours can even exert proper force.”

“You’re the one who’s forgotten—I’m a mage. If a mage like me can force a human to vomit out a monster eating her from the inside, do you really think I can’t break a finger? I could make each joint bend in a different direction—if you’d like to see for yourself, go ahead and try it once more.”

What an amusing woman, Matiel thought.

Normally, he’d be furious at Charlotte’s blunt, tactless attitude—but strangely, he wasn’t this time.

Perhaps because now, he was the one at a disadvantage.

“I suppose wearing gloves would be rather inconvenient if my fingers were broken, so I promise not to point at you again. Now, it’s your turn to step forward. You remember what I said, right? It means nothing unless Baron Lireld himself is brought to that very spot.”

I’m on Tar Mi’s side here. The Duke seems a bit too careless about his relationship with Charlotte. Feelings or no, it’s as if he hasn’t given any thought to the consequences any of his actions will have on her and her life. I’d say any feelings he has are superficial at best.
