Hyun Seo could not forget the first time she saw Do Ha.
The day after moving next to Do Ha’s house, Hyun Seo and her mother, Hye Su, went around giving out rice cakes for the move.
When Hye Su knocked on the nextdoor, a boy in a clean white tshirt emerged.
Seeing the boy who looked a few years older than her, Hyun Seo was surprised and stared at him with wide eyes.
Honestly, she was also taken aback because he was so handsome.
Her mother Hye Su asked him kindly first.
“Hello? Are your parents home?”
“No.”
“They’re not home, huh. We just moved in next door yesterday and are going around to say hello. Try some of these rice cakes.”
“Thank you.”
He was a polite boy, even if his expression was blank.
“We’re right next door, so we’ll see each other often. What’s your name?”
“It’s Han Do Ha.”
“I see, Do Ha. Are you in middle school?”
“I’m in the 6th grade of elementary school.”
He looked like a middle schooler because he was tall for his age, had a handsomely cool face, and was quite mature. But he was younger than she thought.
“Oh my, you’re tall. So you go to the school across the street?”
“Yes.”
“That’s great, Hyun Seo. You can go to school with this older boy in the morning.”
At that, the boy glanced at Hyun Seo.
Hyun Seo, who was ten years old then, thought she felt embarrassed for the first time in her life.

“Hello, big brother.”
Though it was a bit awkward, she raised her hand and gave a shy smile as she spoke for the first time.
“I’m Lee Hyun Seo.”
However, Do Ha, who had been looking down at Hyun Seo, turned his eyes away without responding.
Hye Su chuckled at that and added.
“She’s going to a new school starting Monday. She’ll probably feel a bit awkward because she’s transferring, so could you go with her on the first day?”
“Yes.”
Hyun Seo’s eyes widened again. She expected him to refuse. It was surprising that he answered so compliantly, considering he hadn’t even accepted her greeting.
“Thank you, big brother.”
As Hyun Seo smiled shyly, he glanced down at her again. Once more, he didn’t respond.
“See you on Monday, Do Ha. Here, have another box of rice cakes. You’re growing so you should eat well.”
“Thank you.”
“Since we’re next door, come over often.”
“Yes.”
Despite his sullen expression, he responded well. Of course, only to Hye Su’s words.
Then, on Monday morning, the doorbell at Hyun Seo’s house rang.
“Oh my, Hyun Seo! The boy next door is here!”
“Really?”
“I was going to take you next door, but he came first.”
Hyun Seo smiled with a flushed face. She was very happy that Do Ha, the boy next door, remembered his promise and came to pick her up. She hadn’t expected him to remember.
When she came out and met Do Ha standing at the door, she felt shy again and smiled awkwardly.

“Hi, big brother.”
Upon seeing Hyun Seo come out, Do Ha immediately began walking.
“Do Ha! Please take good care of her!”
Hye Su shouted out the window.
“Yes.”
Then Do Ha bowed his head in response.
“Bye, mom!”
“Okay, take care, Hyun Seo! Make lots of friends!”
“Okay!”
Soon the two set out on their way to school.
Hyun Seo, who was the only one smiling, had to take quick steps to keep up with Do Ha’s long strides.
“Big brother, do you know my name?”
“It’s Lee Hyun Seo.”
“Yeah, you remembered?”
“It’s stupid not to remember something I heard two days ago.”
The boy next door, Do Ha, was gruff but oddly kind. He remembered to come pick her up as they had agreed to go to school together, and he remembered her name.
Throughout the walk, Do Ha didn’t smile at all, but Hyun Seo kept giggling and chattering by herself.
Nevertheless, unlike the first day they met, Do Ha did respond to Hyun Seo’s words to some extent.
After arriving at school, there was some time left before the start of class, so Do Ha took her around and explained where things were. Where the library was, where the health room was, and so on.
In fact, she had already come with her mom the previous week and knew, but Hyun Seo followed Do Ha, pretending not to know.

Not long after that, Hye Su and her daughter encountered Do Ha’s mother, Young Suk.
From the first day Young Suk saw Hye Su, she called her ‘big sister’ and acted friendly.
And after Hye Su became friends with Young Suk, Hyun Seo naturally found a common point between her and Do Ha.
Both Hyun Seo and Do Ha were being raised by their mothers without a father.
Hyun Seo lost her father to a disease about a year ago, and Do Ha’s mother Young Suk was a single mom.
Hyun Seo first heard the term ‘single mom’ through Young Suk, and later asked her own mother to find out what it meant. She also found out why Do Ha’s last name was the same as his mother’s, Han.
But their lives were quite different despite having the same circumstances.
While Hye Su spent a few hours outside working while Hyun Seo was at school and then spent a lot of time with Hyun Seo, Young Suk often left the house.
She heard vaguely that Young Suk was engaged in various activities for economic activity, but she didn’t know exactly what she did.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
