“I’m back.”
Upon returning home, Nelia found her parents more welcoming than before.
“Nelia!”
“You came back earlier than expected.”
Lilly and Sean greeted Nelia one after the other. Lilly took the baggage Nelia was carrying.
I expected a warm welcome, but this is a bit too much.
Nelia eyed her parents suspiciously.
“Why are you acting like this all of a sudden?”
“Ho ho ho, we’re just happy to see our daughter after so long.”
Lilly said, patting Nelia on the shoulder. Sean chimed in.
“That’s right. Nelia, we’re happy to see you. What else could it be? We’re also proud.”
Nelia thought her shoulder, which Lilly patted, hurt and asked Sean.
“Proud of me…?”
“Don’t play dumb. Recently, there’s been much talk about you in social circles.”
This was completely new to her. A bewildered Nelia furrowed her brow.
“Why… why is there so much talk about me in social circles?”
“I heard you’ve been going to the palace with Duke Hart recently. And the rumor is you’re doing well as a maid.”
At Sean’s words, Nelia thought.
So people haven’t been overt about it, but they’ve had questions about my presence after all.
Perhaps the Duke had managed to keep the rumors at bay.
Nelia had never imagined that she’d gain fame in social circles like this.
All I do by the Duke’s side is simple tasks and enjoy desserts.
As Nelia stood with a flustered expression, Lilly’s excited voice reached her ears.

The quiet inside the house was disrupted by Layton.
He came in, making enough noise to be heard on the second floor, then promptly swung open the door to Nelia’s room.
“Hey, Nelia!”
Layton’s face was pale, as if he had seen a ghost.
Layton mumbled something incoherent as he approached Nelia, who was lying on her bed reading.
“What are you talking about?”
Nelia glared at Layton, who had barged in without knocking.
“No, I was passing by Duke Hart’s place today and thought I’d meet you, so I stopped by.”
“What?”
Nelia abruptly sat up.
Knowing it was the day of the lunar eclipse and he would be returning home, why did he use me as an excuse to go to Duke Hart’s residence?
Reading the stern look in her eyes, Layton awkwardly explained.
“My sister is struggling, so as her brother, I had to check in once…”
“Don’t joke.”
Nelia cut him off sharply at his flimsy excuse. Layton’s eyes darted around before he scratched his head.
“Ah… actually, I’ve been quite interested in the Duke lately. So, I thought I’d stop by, both to see his estate and talk under your pretext.”
Nelia narrowed her eyes, staring at Layton.
“And?”
“Even though I knocked on the door of the Duke’s residence, no one answered. So, I climbed the wall to peek inside.”
Ah… Layton again.
Nelia shouted at Layton.
“Are you out of your mind? Why are you snooping around someone else’s house?”
“No… I was sure someone was inside but they were ignoring me, so I looked because I was both angry and curious.”
Layton responded with an awkward face.
Just as Nelia was contemplating telling her father to confine Layton to the monastery, he approached and whispered.
“Anyway, Nelia. That’s not what’s important. Do you know what I saw?”
Layton’s slightly furrowed eyes looked as if he was pondering something tremendous.
Before Nelia could say anything, Layton continued.
“Well… people in robes were tying malicious chains around the Duke’s hands and leading him to a large building.”
