Emilia entered the ducal residence wearing a dress the color of fresh early-summer leaves, her expression calm and composed.

As she was about to return home with Fabio, who had been waiting in the carriage, her heart pounded fiercely when he said the Duke had summoned him today and he must go to the ducal estate.

Was it anxiety that made her heart race, or the thought of seeing him again after several days? Emilia simply tried her best to appear calm.

The butler greeted her politely and led her to where Enrico was waiting.

She had briefly wondered whether he might ask her to perform once more on stage before the “Cinderella” premiere, but seeing that she was being guided to the reception room, she felt a flicker of confusion.

He wasn’t inviting her for a meal, nor asking to see the stage. Had he merely called her to share a cup of tea? Or did he have something specific to say?

Worried he might bring up their uncomfortable conversation from a few days prior, her thoughts raced—until they came to an abrupt halt the moment she saw Enrico sitting on the sofa.

“I greet Your Grace.”

At Emilia’s respectful bow, Enrico’s brow faintly furrowed, then smoothed away.

“…Sit.”

“Yes.”

Enrico stared intently at Emilia as she walked over and sat down opposite him—the same persistent gaze he always fixed on her during performances.

Pressing her hand gently against her left chest as if to still her unusually rapid heartbeat, Emilia settled into her seat, then deliberately placed both hands folded atop her lap to appear natural.

“How is rehearsal going?”

“Yes.”
