The town I visited after a long while looked no different from before. The bustling merchants’ street and the boutique-lined avenue—maintained as such—branched off at a crossroads, and the people, having lived together in the same neighborhood for so long, seemed utterly at ease with one another.

Thus, the arrival of outsiders inevitably drew everyone’s attention at once. Particularly, the sidelong glances cast toward Enrico and herself were deeply irritating.

She had assumed that since this was a distant region, no one would recognize Duke Enrico Michele, yet his excessively striking appearance proved to be the biggest problem of all.

His famously radiant looks—almost as if haloed—drew stares so intense that people went from glancing to outright gawking, making her anxious that Enrico might snap and demand they clear everyone out of sight.

It would have been best if he hadn’t come at all, but since he was already here and taking care of things himself, she felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. Emilia guided Enrico to the restaurant with the best reviews, where they had a simple dinner before heading toward a nearby promenade.

She’d originally wanted to return directly to the mansion, but Fabio had insisted they take a less crowded route he’d found, leaving her no choice but to walk.

“Tomorrow will be busy searching the mansion, so how about we visit the seaside the day after?”

Enrico, draped in a light gray coat suited to the season, strolled leisurely down the path.

“The seaside? Just the two of us?”

“Yes, just the two of us. Stop repeating such inadequate questions.”

“No, it’s just sudden, that’s all.”

Emilia merely shrugged her shoulders, letting his familiar sarcasm wash over one ear.

She’d removed her outer coat entirely, wearing only a violet zouave jacket and skirt—an outfit perfectly suited to the temperature that had dropped with the evening darkness—but she was now beginning to feel the chill.

Perhaps the seaside being so close made the air even cooler.
