The interior was smaller than she had expected. It looked like a log cabin, and the only things inside were a table, a chair, and a fireplace.

When Emilia’s gaze shifted toward the window veiled by black curtains, Alessandro grasped her chin and turned her face toward him.

“You think you know where this is? It’s just a cabin deep in the woods.”

Deep in the woods? If it was this kind of cabin, it was probably near the outskirts—could he possibly intend to slip out of the kingdom like this? Her dazed mind snapped awake, and her heart plummeted with a thud.

He’d likely kidnapped her out of sheer desire, but considering he’d told Enrico to cover up the murder of the blonde woman, it was highly probable he was also holding her as leverage for blackmail.

Her anxiety surged abruptly. She tried hard to take a deep breath, but Alessandro’s smug smirk right before her eyes was unbearably irritating.

Emilia swallowed hard and lowered her eyes. Alessandro watched silently as her lashes trembled and she deliberately avoided his gaze.

“But… what do you plan to do from here? You can’t intend to stay here forever.”

“Of course not.”

Alessandro’s fingertips trailed up her delicate jawline, stopping at her forehead. Then, very slowly, he ran his hand through her hair past her brow and let out a soft, mocking chuckle.

“It’ll depend entirely on how my damned uncle reacts—to either reclaim my rightful place or leave this place with you.”

“…What?”

“I’ve already sent another warning telling him that if he handles the matter properly, I’ll safely return you. Our next move hinges on his reply.”

She felt as if her breath had been cut off. So it was true—he really was using her as blackmail. She’d wanted to leave Enrico because she hated being controlled by him, yet somehow it was Enrico who’d ended up being manipulated, not her.
