A dark, gloomy alleyway.

Though it was early morning, most shops—being night-operated venues—remained closed.

Torrential rain pounded onto a black umbrella, while thick cigarette smoke drifted past the face of the man holding it.

“Maknae.”

He was Joo Sung, one of Kwon Seung Cheol’s trusted aides.

At his call, a burly man who had been sheltering from the rain inside the building entrance rushed out bareheaded in a single stride and bowed before him.

The cigarette dropped carelessly from Joo Sung’s fingers onto the ground was instantly crushed under the man’s shoe, leaving no trace of its original shape.

“Yes, hyung.”

“Go fetch Hyungnim.”

The spot where they stood was lined with illegal gambling dens disguised as ordinary storefronts. Inside one of them, Kwon Seung Cheol was gambling—already for ten hours straight.

Like someone who’d just received an awkward request, Maknae’s expression paled, but he quickly lowered his head again.

“Yes….”

As Maknae disappeared into the building entrance, Joo Sung wiped his shoes roughly in a nearby puddle, folded his umbrella, pressed himself tightly against the storefront’s fire shutter, and lit another cigarette.

Amid the smoke dispersing into the air, he recalled the day he first met Kwon Seung Cheol.

Kwon Seung Cheol had been the only person to extend a hand to him—an orphan who’d grown up possessing nothing.
