Seon Woo briefly stretched his stiff neck before the afternoon outpatient sessions began, having been nonstop with patients. Stretching his interlaced fingers high above his head, he leaned back against the chair and slowly closed his eyes.

Amid the darkness behind his eyelids, the words he’d spoken last night kept circling in his mind.

“You don’t need to make that kind of effort.”

He’d only meant to say she didn’t need to wake up early just to see him off, given his early work hours.

Yet he tacked on unnecessary remarks—like how he preferred being alone, or how such efforts weren’t needed—ruining what had been, up to that point, a rather pleasant atmosphere.

By then, it was already too late to fix; the mood had already shifted irreversibly.

He recalled how, earlier that morning, just as he was about to leave for work, he’d paused hesitantly outside her door.

It felt unfamiliar—this version of himself, now sensitive even to her minor emotional fluctuations.

After a brief pause to gather his thoughts, Seon Woo let out a soft scoff, as if having found the answer.

“Of course. That’s it.”

He was afraid her feelings might change. That was why.

He’d barely managed to win her heart back and even secured the contract—now he feared she might suddenly refuse to go through with it. He quickly wrapped up that line of thought. Still, an inexplicable sense of discomfort lingered, leaving him restless.

His reverie was interrupted by the vibration of his phone in his pocket. Feeling the buzz, he used his teeth to pull off the medical glove on his right hand, then took out his phone and checked the name displayed on the screen.

It was his mother, Eun Jung.

Seon Woo pressed the answer button and wedged the phone between his shoulder and cheek, still holding the removed glove in his mouth as he began the call.
