When her daughter’s coronation as empress fell through and even the ducal consort position was canceled, Madame Berium’s dream of dominating high society shattered into pieces.

Just as she’d expected… Whenever she thought of the noble ladies who would now look down on her with that knowing, scornful gaze, Madame Berium truly felt like dying.

Since the Grand Duke had spoken of the annulment with such gentleness, her mother held no resentment toward him at all.

“I am Claire. I intend to soon retire to a quiet estate and spend the rest of my days there. Naturally, I’ll withdraw from society as well. I cannot possibly force such a life upon your young daughter—it would be inhumane. You are a kind and wise woman, and I trust you’ll understand my feelings.”

All the blame fell solely upon Liz.

“I can’t show my face anywhere because of you! An annulment? Was it not enough to simply reject the match, that you had to go so far as an annulment?!”

“Others your age or even younger are already married with children and living happily—what have you been doing all this time? Couldn’t you even hold onto a man’s heart, bringing such disgrace upon us? Why must you keep me from stepping outside? Why?!”

Liz didn’t bother arguing back with her mother simply because she saw no need to.

She was finally, completely free.

Thinking of it as the price she had to pay, even her mother’s harsh words seemed somewhat bearable.

Not that she’d ever go out of her way to seek them out, of course.

Liz avoided going downstairs as much as possible.

All her meals were sent up to her room.

For walks, she simply opened every window in her room and paced inside.
