Rene murmured the note’s contents and then spoke.

“Isn’t this written far too vaguely?”

“And if it weren’t?”

Liz, supporting her waist with both hands as she paced the room, turned from one corner toward another and continued.

“What should I say? Should I plainly tell him I’ve already made plans, so he shouldn’t join hands with the Grand Duke?”

“Hmm, that wouldn’t be quite right.”

Rene nodded, swaying her body back and forth. The maternity rocking chair she sat on moved along with her.

Morning sunlight bathed half the garden in light. Though the other half remained under the shadow of the main palace, that shadow would soon lift. And when it did, they would know.

Which path Ishar had chosen.

“Do you think which side he’ll choose?”

Rene asked.

“I’m not sure. He probably chose the side he wanted.”

Liz replied calmly as she rounded the corner. Sunlight filtering through the lattice window cast her shadow short upon the floor, making her belly appear even more pronounced within it.

“I think he probably took the Grand Duke’s hand.”
