It was an election full of surprises.

Then again, the mere revival of the Consul system itself was already a surprise.

The elder lords of the Grand Duke faction had begun advocating for the necessity of a Consul to counter the increasingly dominant Imperial faction.

But they hadn’t held high hopes. The Emperor’s supporters were growing in number by the day, and people generally held negative views toward reviving old institutions.

Yet, the proposal they’d submitted to the council in a spirit of resignation had passed.

It had barely scraped past a majority—and, to make matters worse, even the Emperor himself had voted in favor.

The elder lords of the Grand Duke faction guessed he must have done so to demonstrate his generosity toward opposing factions.

But that notion vanished the moment they learned who his nominee was.

The Emperor had clearly intended to place one of his own in the position meant to check his power—none other than Duke Lemere, head of the council. It was obvious he aimed to control not only the council but also the Consulship.

“Cunning fellow.”

The Grand Duke faction elders cursed inwardly and swiftly changed their strategy. Their originally intended candidate, Duke Bert, would no longer suffice.

They needed someone with greater influence, higher recognition, and more prestige. In their minds, there was only one such person.

They went to see Grand Duke Montaner.

Though the Grand Duke repeatedly refused, he eventually relented under the elders’ persistent pleas, who begged him to lay a solid foundation for the position they’d so painstakingly created.

At least, that’s how it appeared to them—that he’d reluctantly agreed.
