Liz said the entire slum would be engulfed in a massive inferno.

Because the fire broke out deep in the night, most people wouldn’t be able to evacuate in time and would suffocate to death.

Those lucky enough to wake up would try to escape through the burning partitions, only to catch fire themselves and meet an even worse fate.

And all of this was due to arson by someone—though she didn’t know who the culprit was.

That’s what the book Liz had read claimed. But Rene had a different opinion about the cause of the fire.

“It’d be stranger if there wasn’t a fire.”

Watching through her lens as people placed a freshly lit oil drum near the tent and gathered around it, poking glowing embers with sticks, Rene clicked her tongue.

Even without arson, it seemed destined that this place would eventually be swallowed by flames.

It seemed far more effective to simply warn them to be careful with fire than to sit here waiting for an unknown arsonist.

“Damn Empress.”

Scanning the street through her lens, Rene cursed under her breath.

It was already the fourth day, and no one suspicious of arson had appeared. The residents had become so familiar from constant observation that she even felt as if she’d known some of the children for years.

At this point, Liz herself was starting to seem suspicious.

Amelda Laper’s affair had also ended in failure.

It was clearly true that what she’d said differed from what Rene knew—but if that was indeed the truth, it posed another problem: it meant Amelda couldn’t remember things properly.
