Lilia did not want to live like Liz.
So she thought she could win over Viscount Bert’s heart in a gentler way, she was determined to prove it.
“It’s delicious tea.”
“Yes…….”
“Would you like to go for a walk with me tomorrow? I have found a good place for a stroll.”
“I’m a bit busy tomorrow.”
“What about the day after tomorrow…….”
“The day after tomorrow, I’m also a bit…….”
“When would it be convenient for you? I’ll accommodate whenever it’s suitable for Miss Lilia.”
“I’m not sure when I’ll be available. I need to stay home for a while… and… also…….”
“Then I’ll wait as long as it takes for Miss Lilia to have time.”
“No, don’t do that!”
Lilia herself was more surprised than Viscount Bert when her firm words suddenly slipped out.
She rushed to explain her true intention with her flushed face.
“Ah… what I mean… Your lordship must be very busy, and I feel sorry that waiting for me might cause you to miss other important appointments. I don’t want you to worry about me, just enjoy your life comfortably…”
There was a figure watching from afar.
Tsk, tsk.
Leaning against the window frame, Liz clicked her tongue as she looked down on the scene.
“She’s trying hard, very hard.”
Being on the third floor, she couldn’t hear the conversation clearly, but she could guess what was being discussed.
“She can’t refuse, she just can’t.”
After all, Lilia, with her ingrained habit of pleasing others, might find refusal impossible.
Looking down at Lilia, who seemed uneasy, Liz murmured sympathetically.
“The male lead needs to help her.”
Normally, the male lead would have appeared at that moment, with a blatant lie, to take Lilia away. That would advance the relationship between the two, but there was no sign of that happening.
Should I give him a hint?
Liz left her room and asked the first servant she saw.
“Where is Kain?”
“He’s probably in his room?”
“Ah… I see.”
Liz headed downstairs.
Just as she was rounding a corner of the corridor, Monica rushed past her.
Startled, Liz stopped and caught her breath.
‘I almost bumped into her. What’s the hurry? Has she become very busy since becoming a ladyinwaiting?’
Looking puzzled, Liz moved in the opposite direction to Monica.
Then she spotted something sparkling on the floor and stopped.
Bending over, she picked up a necklace with an emerald pendant the size of a thumbnail on a thin gold chain.
‘Is it Monica’s?’
It looked rather expensive, though.
Liz examined the necklace closely. It seemed familiar.
‘Where have I seen this before?’
Ah…
The memory came back instantly.
It was a gift Lilia had received from Viscount Bert.
In front of her mother and the ladiesinwaiting, Viscount Bert had even put it around her neck himself.
But why was it here on the floor?
While scrutinizing the necklace, she noticed that the clasp was broken.
‘Ah, that’s why. She’s going to get it fixed.’
Nodding, Liz was satisfied with her conclusion.
Since Monica was already gone, there was no choice but to leave the necklace in Lilia’s room later, but Liz decided to put that off for now.
First, she needed to meet Kain.
To subtly persuade him to help the heroine escape Viscount Bert’s persistent pursuit.
That was the priority.
Liz put the necklace in her pocket. Then, as she approached Kain’s door to knock…
“Ugh…….”
A pained moan reached her through the door.
“……!”
Something flashed through Liz’s mind.
‘It’s the medicine.’
Just remembering that time sent shivers down her spine. It was a pain she never wanted to experience again.
But unlike her, Kain had to face that painful moment every ten days.
If she had been as she once was, she might have opened the door and hugged him right away.
But now…….
Liz withdrew the hand she was about to knock with.
Her face was filled with pity.
Kain was a man who endured pain well.
There had been a time when they were hunting together, and Liz’s misaimed arrow had struck Kain’s inner shoulder.
It must have been quite painful, the scale tip digging deep into his flesh, yet he did not lose his smile and rather comforted a tearful Liz.
It was the same when he caught a fever while nursing Liz who had been ill with fever.
He seemed so fine that she didn’t even realize he was sick. Only when she carried him on her back later, feeling the furnacelike heat through their chests pressed together, did she realize that his condition was not normal.
Seeing him express pain like that, Liz could not imagine how much he must be suffering.
Even the amount he ate differed from hers.
Liz found her vision blurring without realizing it.
‘I’m the same way. Even when playing the piano, could it be that I still have feelings for that man?’
But Liz soon shook her head and denied her own thoughts.
‘No, affection and compassion are different. I would have felt this way for anyone, not just Kain.’
Shortly after, there was a rustling[dash] sound, and something fell to the floor.
Perhaps the pain had stopped, and he was stretching out the body that had been hunched in tension.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
