A fresh grassy scent tickled the tip of his nose. Woo Jin instinctively reached out his hand, then quickly pulled it back.

“What is it?”

“A houseplant.”

At the word “houseplant,” Woo Jin’s expression hardened.

“You want me to take care of something I can’t even see?”

“This one isn’t meant to be seen—it’s meant to be touched.”

“What?”

“Just let me hold your hand for a sec, Seol Woo Jin?”

“No.”

“Aw, just once!”

Before she even finished speaking, she grabbed his hand and placed it on the plant.

Caught off guard by the warmth of her touch on the back of his hand and the slightly rough texture against his palm, Woo Jin couldn’t pull away in time and stayed still, letting her do as she pleased.

“Stroke it like this. Like this.”

She held his hand and slowly moved it up and down.

“The fragrance gets stronger that way. Isn’t it amazing?”

Her voice sounded oddly excited. But the moment her hand stopped moving, Woo Jin roughly swatted it away.

“Ah! Why’d you do that!”

“I hate plants like that. Did you at least check there aren’t any bugs in the pot? I need to wash my hands.”

Woo Jin abruptly stood up and walked straight into his room, slamming the door shut behind him.

What the heck? Does he have OCD too? Ugh…

At the same time, she realized for the first time that there was a bathroom inside his room too. Still, feeling embarrassed after her deliberately chosen houseplant had been outright rejected, she muttered under her breath.

“Right. With that kind of temper, who needs a plant? Even a plant would just wither and die in this house.”

She started putting the pot back into the shopping bag—but paused, staring for a long while at the room he’d gone into.

Then, she placed the pot on the living room display cabinet, deep in the corner so he wouldn’t knock it over while walking by.

“You stay here and try fixing his awful temper. You don’t even have to touch him—just blast out all the phytoncides you’ve got. Maybe then he’ll soften up a bit, huh? Right? If he keeps that attitude, he’ll never survive in society—not because he’s blind, but because of his damn temper. Though he probably thinks it’s the blindness holding him back. Speaking of which… I should probably get back into society myself soon… Ugh, seriously, where am I even gonna find a job? So suffocating, ugh.”

Unaware that Woo Jin’s door was slightly ajar, Su Young rambled on, complaining to the plant.

Having slept poorly the night before and feeling tense from the unfamiliar sensation, Woo Jin was inhaling medication through a nebulizer over his nose and mouth.

Her murmuring from the living room drifted into his ears.

At first, he thought she was on the phone—but it didn’t sound like it. Who did she mean, asking the plant to fix his temper?

She said it wasn’t his blindness but his attitude that kept him from functioning in society. Why did she care about his social life anyway?

Then she started worrying aloud about her own job search. Seriously? Look at yourself before worrying about others…

He also couldn’t help but wonder why she was so interested in him. She didn’t sound like she was just pitying him—could she actually be interested in him?

But then the thought of his own situation made him smile bitterly. Are you crazy, Seol Woo Jin?

The previous housekeeper had said she’d be back in about three weeks—meaning only two weeks remained. What would she do then? Keep preparing for job interviews?

No matter what she did, the fact that she’d stop coming in two weeks made him uncomfortably restless again, and he took a deep breath of the fine medicinal mist from the machine.

[This is the timeline separator]

“Ahem.”

Ji Hyun watched silently as Woo Jin kept clearing his throat mid-meal.

“Don’t stare. I’m fine.”

Woo Jin said this while drinking water, and Ji Hyun chuckled softly. That brat—sometimes he really acts like he can see.

“There’s a houseplant in the living room now? Did Su Young bring that?”

“Yeah.”

He’d shoved it into the corner so he wouldn’t have to touch it, but he’d noticed the scent right away. Was she really that clueless?

“You hate potted plants. What if there are bugs?”

“Yeah.”

“Want me to throw it out for you?”

“Leave it.”

At Woo Jin’s cold reply, Ji Hyun just stared at him quietly. The kid’s changed. Could it be because of her?

“Cough, cough.”

When the throat-clearing turned into coughing, Ji Hyun immediately pulled out his phone.

“It’s fine, cough! I’m okay! Cough, cough!”

Woo Jin tried to stop him, knowing Ji Hyun was calling someone, but Ji Hyun ignored him completely.

After just a few exchanges, in less than thirty minutes, a man with salt-and-pepper gray hair arrived at Woo Jin’s house.

Sitting on the sofa, the man examined Woo Jin with a stethoscope and then smiled gently.

“It seems your bronchitis has flared up again due to a cold. I’ll send a nurse with medicine—take it thirty minutes after eating.”

When Woo Jin had been rescued from the fire scene, he’d had no visible injuries.

However, he’d inhaled so much smoke that his bronchial tubes were badly damaged. Though consistent treatment had helped, chronic bronchitis remained unavoidable.

Thus, whenever he caught a cold or on days with high air pollution, he inevitably suffered from coughing, phlegm, and breathing difficulties. But Dr. Kang always comforted him by saying, “Compared to the people who died back then, this little blindness, this little bronchitis—it’s nothing.”

“Your face looks better than last time I saw you. Have you been eating?”

Dr. Kang Hyung Min had been Chairman Seol Ma Joong’s personal physician for forty years—a seasoned doctor who’d known Ji Hyun and Woo Jin since birth, making him practically family.

Because he’d overseen all the tests and treatments after Woo Jin lost his sight, Woo Jin often recoiled from him—and frequently behaved outrageously rude. But Dr. Kang always just brushed it off, gently coaxing him instead.

“He skips breakfast, but he’s been eating lunch and dinner pretty regularly.”

Instead of Woo Jin responding to Dr. Kang’s question, Ji Hyun answered kindly while Woo Jin retreated slightly from the doctor.

“Good. You’ve got to eat well—you can’t rely on exercise alone to stay healthy.”

“What’s the point of eating a lot if I never go outside? I’ll just gain weight.”

Woo Jin grumbled pointedly, but Dr. Kang never lost his gentle smile.

“That’s exactly why you should go outside more. Don’t you know how nice the weather’s been lately?”

Hearing the same old refrain again, Woo Jin straightened his clothes, abruptly stood up, and disappeared into his room.

Despite Woo Jin’s rudeness, Dr. Kang’s expression didn’t change. He turned to Ji Hyun and asked softly,

“Woo Jin’s changed. Since when does he sit through an entire checkup in the living room without swatting my hand away?”

“Yeah. He’s gotten closer to the housekeeper, so he’s eating better and coming out to the living room more often.”

Dr. Kang looked surprised.

“Oh, they changed housekeepers?”

“Yes. The previous one hurt her back, so her niece is filling in—and she seems to get along really well with Woo Jin.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!”

He spoke loudly, genuinely delighted.

“So this young lady will keep coming, then?”

“Well, since she’s just filling in… I think she’ll only come for about two more weeks, then stop.”

“In that case, Ji Hyun, you find a way to make sure she keeps coming.”

“Me?”

Ji Hyun asked, slightly taken aback.

“Yes. Didn’t you just say Woo Jin’s coming out to the living room and eating because of her? If she leaves after two weeks, won’t he just go back to how he was?”

“Oh… Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“So you think of a way.”

Dr. Kang patted Ji Hyun’s shoulder—a man a full head taller than himself—and beamed widely. It was the rare, precious smile he only showed when a patient showed signs of recovery.

[This is the timeline separator]

Standing at the bus stop, Su Young gazed up at the row of shops ahead, lost in thought. Eating lunch every day was great, but choosing what to eat was always a dilemma.

Ji Hyun had told her to just buy whatever she wanted, and if Woo Jin wanted to join, he’d eat with her—if not, she shouldn’t push herself. But since she had to eat anyway, she wanted to bring something Woo Jin would enjoy.

The pork intestines she’d brought over on the weekend had been a total failure. She’d clearly said they were “makchang,” yet he took a bite without reaction—only to immediately spit it into the sink and make a fuss.

He hadn’t even forgotten to make a disgusted face, asking, “How can you put something like that in your mouth?”

It was so delicious! And expensive! She’d bought it with great effort, yet he seemed to have no idea what makchang even was—or maybe he knew but had never tried it before.

From then on, she became far more careful about choosing meals. What should she get today? She’d heard moms always say, “What should we eat today?”—and now she found herself asking the same thing every morning before work.

Just then, the smell of fried chicken drifted over. Huh? Is there a chicken place here?

She quickly looked around and spotted chicken skewers roasting on a grill inside a food truck. Yes! That’s it!

It was cheap too—two whole chickens for only 10,000 won! Without hesitation, Su Young dashed toward the truck.

[This is the timeline separator]

Though she’d proudly arranged the fried chicken on a plate, Woo Jin didn’t look particularly pleased.

“There’s a whole chicken in front of you, Seol Woo Jin. Fork on your right, and on your left…”

“Debone it for me.”

“What?”

“Take the meat off the bones.”

Ugh, this brat…!

“What are you talking about? It’s not fish—you don’t need deboning! Just grab it and eat!”

“I don’t want to touch it. You debone it and give me the meat.”

Seriously? She’d told her friends he was a retaker, but now she realized he was basically a toddler. Does he really need someone to debone his fried chicken? That has nothing to do with being blind!

But Woo Jin simply wouldn’t eat if he had to—holding the chicken, pulling it apart, removing bones—it all sounded unbearably tedious.

Just imagining it made him feel embarrassingly messy.

“If it’s too annoying, then forget it.”

As he stood to leave, Su Young quickly grabbed his arm, then let go and cried out,

“Fine! Fine! I’ll debone it—just sit down!”

“You’re going to use your hands?”

“Yes!”

She shouted forcefully, trying to sound angry—but Woo Jin replied calmly,

“Then wash your hands before you start.”

Ugh… Seriously… Su Young wanted to bonk him on the head with a fork, but she suppressed the urge with divinely granted patience and stood up.

As she rose, his gaze followed her.

“Where are you going?”

“To check if there are disposable gloves!”

“Why are you mad?”

“I’m not mad!”

“Your voice sounds mad. Don’t lie just because I can’t see.”

Watching him never lose an argument, she wondered what his mother could possibly have eaten while pregnant with him.

Even as she grumbled internally, she deboned the chicken—and he skillfully picked up the pieces with his chopsticks. Seeing him actually eat well, her mood lifted, and her voice automatically turned gentle.

“Is it tasty?”

“Too salty.”

She clenched her teeth and muttered under her breath,

“There’s cola on your left.”

“Don’t talk with your teeth clenched. I hate that sound.”

“Seol Woo Jin.”

“What.”

“When your mom was pregnant with you, what did she dream of? A raccoon? A hyena?”

Woo Jin paused mid-bite, then lifted his head.

“What about you? A badger? A fox?”

Though she’d started it, his refusal to back down quietly infuriated her—while Woo Jin’s lips curled into a faint smirk.

“A white horse.”

When she said this sulkily, Woo Jin tilted his head in genuine surprise.

“A white horse?”

“Yes. Mom dreamed she was riding a white horse, soaring through the sky.”

“That… That’s really your birth dream? Are you sure she didn’t dream about someone else?”

“No! She got pregnant with me right after that dream.”

“You should check if there was another pregnant woman nearby at the time.”

“Why are you stealing my birth dream? You’re seriously weird. You must be a raccoon—no other animal fits you.”

“Eggplant.”

“What?”

“Mom picked an eggplant.”

Su Young’s face instantly flushed red all the way to her neck. Worried he might notice, she quickly lowered her head.

Though he couldn’t see her blushing, Woo Jin clearly heard her breath catch—and both corners of his mouth twisted into a wicked grin.

“You… What were you thinking just now?”

“N-nothing! I wasn’t thinking anything!”

“You were definitely thinking something.”

“I-I was just chewing the chicken!”

“But I didn’t hear any chewing.”

This man definitely had superpowers—he just happened to be blind. Instinctively, Su Young shoved the piece of chicken breast she’d been holding straight into his mouth.

“Ugh! Blech! What is this!”

“Chicken breast. For your stamina.”

“What do I need stamina for?”

“What indeed?”

“To see eggplants?”

This insane, blind, perverted demon disguised as a human cackled gleefully right in front of Su Young.
