Riding in the carriage Fernando had prepared, Etienne suddenly recalled a similar moment two years ago.

It had been when she returned to the capital after meeting Reinhart—so soon after her regression that sitting alone with Fernando had been unbearably awkward.

Even though she had severed her feelings for him, it had still been difficult to act naturally around him. Yet, through repeated clashes with Fernando and gradually resolving each issue that arose, she now felt quite at ease.

Perhaps because, as she’d once told Reinhart, she had loved him with her entire being, she had been able to let go even more swiftly.

‘If not for that, I truly wouldn’t have been able to step a single foot outside my home.’

Out of fear that she might accidentally run into Fernando.

While Etienne gazed absently at the scenery outside the window, Fernando quietly watched her face.

Etienne usually wore her hair loose and natural. She’d let it blow freely in the wind or, when it bothered her, casually tuck it behind her ears with her hand. But today, having tied all her hair back, her entire face was fully revealed.

Her rounded forehead and the soft curve of her nose accentuated her profile. And once his eyes fell upon her plump, full lips, he couldn’t look away.

The bold girl who had once confidently declared he could be her husband had now grown into a woman of quiet elegance. He wished she would once again utter those words—wished she’d ask him to be her husband with those beautiful lips.

Since their first meeting, when Etienne had shaken him to his core, she had never again said anything of the sort. He’d gladly hear even a jest of it, just one more time.

‘Was it too late?’

By revealing his feelings openly, he himself had squandered the chance for her to utter those playful words again.

“Fernando?”

His gaze, lingering on Etienne’s lips, lifted upward—and met her eyes looking directly at him. He felt as if he might be drawn into that gaze.
