After the situation settled down somewhat, the inn returned to silence. Etienne, unable to contain her curiosity, went to Reinhart’s room.

She felt she wouldn’t be able to sleep peacefully without asking. Besides, since the Crown Prince might return to the palace at any moment, she thought this was her chance. When Etienne knocked, a voice from inside told her to come in.

“Your Highness.”

“I was just thinking I needed someone to drink with. Come in.”

Reinhart greeted Etienne cheerfully, swirling a wine glass in his hand.

“Come sit here. What kind of wine shall I pour for you?”

“I’m fine, thank you.”

“Why? Are you too young to drink alcohol yet?”

Etienne shook her head. Right now, she didn’t care about wine—she wanted to hear, with a clear mind, exactly what had happened.

As if sensing her thoughts, Reinhart stopped pressing her and sat back down, leaving him holding only an empty wine glass.

“Did you expect me to come see you?”

“I knew you’d be curious, so I thought you’d come.”

Reinhart glanced at his empty wine glass, then set it down in the center of the table as if a thought had suddenly occurred to him. He reached into his inner pocket and gave Etienne a look that said she could go ahead and ask.

“Did you deliberately have Prince Ludvi arrested?”

“Yes.”
