By the time they had nearly reached the foot of the mountain, night had fallen completely around them. When visibility vanished entirely, Etienne finally took Reinhart’s hand and relied on him to descend.

“The things you said earlier… while soaking your feet….”

“What about them? Don’t tell me you’re about to insist I suddenly remember them or something?”

Etienne tried to shake off his hand as if ready to let go immediately. But not only did her hand fail to slip free—his fingers intertwined with hers even more firmly. She had only taken his hand for support; anything beyond that felt burdensome.

Yet the more Etienne tried to pull away, the more tightly he entwined their fingers, making it seem better just to stay still. At that, his fingers loosened slightly. Reinhart tilted his head at the same time.

“I’ll remember it all on my own.”

“And what about me?”

“Don’t change.”

Reinhart released Etienne’s hand as if granting her a favor.

“Just hold on for exactly two years. Understood?”

Setting a specific timeframe while telling her to endure left Etienne utterly bewildered. Pretending to catch her breath, she turned her body slightly and thought to herself.

‘He isn’t listening to a single word I say.’

She’d told him not to expect anything from her. Even during their silent descent, his expression had looked carefree—she’d suspected as much, and sure enough, she was right.

“I’ll behave in a way that won’t burden you like this until then, so don’t worry.”

“You don’t realize it already is burdensome, Your Highness.”
