Unrequited Love is Over, Fend for Yourselves (5 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 41
“Just go a bit slower.”
Etienne’s trembling legs gave out, and she sank down right where she stood. She knew they had to get down the mountain before sunset, but her constant worry about slipping had worn her out in no time.
Reinhart turned around upon hearing Etienne’s voice. Wiping the sweat from his brow, he assessed her condition.
“I told you to just hold my hand and walk.”
She had refused earlier, and now look—she’d collapsed from exhaustion. His chiding made Etienne look up at him in exasperation.
“What if someone sees us walking hand in hand so amiably, Your Highness?”
“You worried about that now, after we’ve already spent so much time together?”
Reinhart spoke as if her concern were absurd, and Etienne fell silent.
They’d fallen into the same hole together, so leaning on him out of fatigue was something he could easily overlook. Yet even knowing that, she couldn’t bring herself to depend on him so easily.
After all, she now knew he was the Crown Prince—the very reason she had turned back time. Inside the hole, the situation had been so extraordinary that she hadn’t had the mental space to overthink things. But now that they were outside, her thoughts had grown tangled.
How would the Crown Prince use her now? How would he exploit her? And in that process, might there come a moment when protecting her house would become too heavy a burden for her to bear?
When she alone had carried the secret, her goal had been clear: save the Crown Prince and ensure her whole family survived. But now, she couldn’t tell what Reinhart was truly thinking.
That uncertainty unsettled her.
“Remember when we drank flower tea together? If Fernando hadn’t been there, who knows how the rumors might have changed.”
Etienne hid her true feelings behind a plausible excuse. Worried he might see through her lie, she even lowered her head as if massaging her leg, so she couldn’t see Reinhart’s expression.
