“We should replace the curtains in the lobby with thicker ones.”

“It’s gotten quite cold, milady. Shall I inspect the fireplace?”

“Oh, yes. That would be good.”

The ducal estate, now returned to by the duke and duchess, was busy preparing for the coming winter.

Until recently, the duchess had regarded the estate merely as a temporary stopover and had never paid it any attention. Moreover, for a long time the estate had gone without a woman’s touch due to the duchess’s prolonged absence.

Such neglect was certainly not something Adeline could overlook. Thus, she had personally taken charge and was now issuing various instructions.

“Also inspect the bedchambers and the servants’ rooms…”

“Adeline.”

Cassis wrapped his arms around Adeline from behind as she surveyed the lobby and directed repairs.

Adeline halted her words mid-sentence and reached her hand toward the arms that encircled her.

“Oh, Cassis. How are you feeling?”

Adeline’s touch revealed Cassis’s arms radiating intense heat.

Though the poison had been discovered before the situation grew fatal—thus sparing his life—his condition during recovery remained far from normal, causing bouts of fever.

“There may be recurring episodes of fever and loss of consciousness during the recovery process.”

Adeline recalled the words of the attending physician.
