“What do you think of it?”

Adeline’s tightly shut eyes slowly opened at the voice resonating in her ears.

“What, what do you mean…….”

In her fluster, Adeline stuttered, unaware of her faltering speech.

Only then did she realize his gaze was not on her, but rather on the flickering candle on the table.

“I’m talking about that candle. What do you think of it?”

He met Adeline’s eyes directly, as if coaxing an answer from her.

Adeline furrowed her brow deeply.

On the surface, it seemed like he was asking about the candle’s scent, but Adeline perceived his true intentions.

It was the candle she had placed. The scent was something he would know better.

He wasn’t really asking about the fragrance; it was an implication to spend the night together.

Suddenly, she snapped back to reality, a reality she had momentarily forgotten, captivated by his appearance.

This was the nature of Thorpeio Cassis.

Adeline pushed him away as she spoke, “I can’t.”

“What can’t you?”

He feigned ignorance, which annoyed her immensely.

“What do you mean? The doctor said absolute rest is essential in the early stages! You can’t even think of such things!”

As Adeline raised her voice, looking intently into his eyes, a smirk spread across his face.

“When did I ever say we should sleep together?”

He approached her with a lifted corner of his mouth.

“I had no idea you wanted it so badly. Unfortunately, I can’t always stay in my office.”

“…….”

“We do have a rather passionate relationship, don’t we?”

Cassis lightly tapped her shoulder, then moved to the table and sat on the sofa.

He showed her a pile of documents.

“I’m going to work here tonight, so go to sleep with that in mind.”

Time passed.

True to his word, he didn’t come to her bed but remained working.

The silence was heavy.

Apart from the sound of flipping papers and the pen scratching, it was eerily quiet.

Adeline lay on her back, facing away from the window.

Even the moonlight that had peeked through the window seemed to disappear into the deep night.

Somehow, she couldn’t easily fall asleep.

Even though she was turned away, she was acutely aware of his presence on the other side of the room.

Occasionally, he would flip a page or let out a breath.

His breathing reached Adeline’s ears distinctly, as if he was breathing right next to her, tickling her ears.

Adeline couldn’t help but picture him in her mind.

The man leaning back on the fabric sofa, crossing his legs while flipping through documents.

It was maddening.

Her entire nervous system was on high alert towards Cassis.

She feared he might notice she wasn’t asleep. Adeline could barely breathe in or out.

During this restless night, the sound of flipping papers ceased.

Then, the sound of a candle being extinguished and darkness engulfed the room.

Footsteps approached, clothes rustled, and the end of the bed dipped slightly.

Adeline’s heart tightened and then relaxed repeatedly.

The bedding seemed to be pulled towards him, and she felt his intense gaze.

It seemed like he was looking at her.

‘He didn’t notice, did he?’

In the perfect darkness, his deep breath reached the back of her neck.

Of course. This man would not just let her sleep peacefully.

Adeline’s heart pounded.

Her heartbeats were so clear in her ears that he must have heard them too.

With a dizzying thought, Adeline clenched her hand.

Just when she thought she was doomed, his breath receded.
And then there was the rustling of the bedding, followed by silence.

Adeline was perplexed.

If it were the man she knew, he wouldn’t just leave her alone when she couldn’t sleep.

Especially the Duke of Thorpeio, known for his mischievous remarks.

‘Did I actually hope for something…?’

In the tranquil dawn, Adeline placed her hand over her wildly beating heart.

It was a different sensation from the suffocating tension that had caused her heart to pound.

Late in the morning, Adeline finally stirred, woken by the sunlight shining on her eyes.

She had hardly slept last night, her nerves stretched thin because of Cassis who insisted on working in the bedroom.

Adeline thought she would stay awake all night, anxious about sharing the space with Cassis. But she had managed to fall asleep only in the early hours of dawn.

A maid who entered the bedroom promptly greeted her.

“You look quite tired. Are you okay?”

It was Becky, one of the few maids in the duke’s residence who hadn’t ignored Adeline from the beginning.

Adeline smiled softly in response.

“I’m fine. Just had a bit of trouble sleeping.”

“Since there’s a baby in your belly, you should have slept well… Did morning sickness keep you up?”

‘I was up all night because of the Duke, not morning sickness.’

Adeline couldn’t tell Becky the truth that it was Cassis, not morning sickness, that had kept her awake. She just smiled at Becky’s comment.

“There’s no schedule for the day. Shall I draw the curtains so you can rest more?”

“Would you? Thank you, Becky.”

When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman

“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.

Was I nothing but his substitute to you from beginning to end?”
