After Countess Dyke left, Riena, who had been waiting for Cassel to return home, was extremely confused.

Fragmented pieces of information that couldn’t be pieced together swirled chaotically in her head.

She also remembered the conversation she had with the Countess in the parlor.

Cassel’s voice, which had sounded somewhat questionable, also lingered.

On top of that, the face of Johannes Belliard, who harbored a chilling lust, floated in her mind as she had seen in her dream.

‘Why on earth would Sir Belliard kill Mother and the children?’

The last conversation she had with the Countess was not smooth. The Countess was so agitated that she couldn’t even speak properly and her words were all over the place.

However, from the broken words the Countess had uttered, Riena could roughly guess what had happened between her and Johannes.

‘It seems Mother made some kind of deal with Sir Belliard.’

So she must have made a self-deprecating remark that she shouldn’t have listened to him in the first place.

‘The only thing Mother could have as a weakness to Sir Belliard would be money. Could it be that the viscounty is in debt to the marquis family?’

No matter how much she wracked her brain, that seemed the most plausible answer. What other connection could there be between the Countess and Johannes?

But for it to be a relationship entangled in such a simple financial matter, the Countess was consumed by fear to an excessive degree.

Money could be paid back and that would be the end of it.

If the Dyke family was experiencing financial difficulties, that was the problem, but in that case, she would have just begged Riena to pay off the debt for her. Regardless of whether Riena would actually grant that request.

But then why did she keep repeating that he would kill them without saying anything else?

And what about the remark that Johannes was cold-hearted and cruel?

Johannes Belliard was the man who least fit those words in this empire.

‘Of course, but……’

Why couldn’t she shake off this nagging feeling?

Why did the Countess insist that she, her stepdaughter Riena, was being threatened by Johannes, the man who had whispered words of love to her?

No matter how much she thought about it, there was a contradictory point that didn’t connect the two facts.

She had to find out where that contradiction came from.

And she also had to find out why Cassel had urgently sought out the Dyke mansion that dawn.

Riena intuitively felt that all these events were connected. She couldn’t explain the reason logically, but she felt it instinctively.

‘If Cass hadn’t come, I probably would have had no choice but to accept Sir Belliard’s proposal.’

She tried to imagine what would have happened that dawn if Cassel Winkler hadn’t been there.

If he hadn’t arrived on time, Riena would have been dragged to the mansion by the Knight Commander.

Joanna would have reported her every move to the Countess in detail, and security at the mansion would have become even stricter.

The stroke of luck of Riena escaping would not have happened again.

In a situation where it was uncertain whether Raoul Berna would come or not, she had to make a choice.

Whether to marry Baron Rothman according to the Countess’ wishes……

‘Or to ask Sir Belliard for help.’

Even if she didn’t accept his proposal, she would have asked him to help her leave the Dyke mansion and meet Viscountess Donovan.

The kind and gentle man who had confessed to having feelings for her would not have been able to turn his back on her and would have helped her.

Just as she had told Raoul in her dream.

‘It wasn’t a dream showing the future.’

That dream was not a premonition. It wasn’t a kind dream that showed what was going to happen so that she could come up with countermeasures in advance.

It was showing what would have happened if Cassel Winkler had not intervened in her life, specifically if he had not come that dawn.

‘The dream about Noah has nothing to do with my situation, but……’

Putting aside the other dreams, the dream about Noah’s funeral was out of the blue. What did it have to do with Riena or Johannes?

But apart from that, things roughly fell into place.

‘He had asked me to tell him if I had another dream.’

Maybe Cassel also had a story to tell about this dream.

Could it be that he had the same dream as her?

So was that why he came to propose so urgently that day and asked her if she still trusted Raoul while being wary of him?

And.

‘When he told me not to let go of him no matter what, did he mean that I might let go of my own life? So was that why he told me not to go to the west bell tower to prevent that?’

It was confusing. Without Cassel by her side to provide answers, there was no way to resolve the questions.

Riena decided to ask Amy about her curiosities for the time being.

“Amy.”

“Yes, Young Lady.”

“You said Cass suddenly sent you and the others to the capital? Saying he would go to the south and come back.”

“Yes, that’s right.”

When Riena tapped the other side of the table as if telling her to sit, Amy sat in the empty seat.

“And there was no sign of that happening before?”

“Yes! His Grace has always been someone who doesn’t show it. That’s why no one in the mansion knew His Grace had a young lady he cared for.”

“Then, on that day, the day Cass sent you all to the capital. Did anything special happen to Cass that day?”

“Something special……”

Amy slightly furrowed her brow as she recalled the events from a few months ago.

“It doesn’t have to be anything particularly special. Just, how should I put it? Was there anything even slightly different about Cass compared to usual?”

“Hmm.”

After much contemplation, Amy finally clapped her hands as if she remembered something.

“I think he might have had a nightmare.”

“A nightmare?”

“Yes. I didn’t see it myself, but the valet who was in charge of His Grace said so. I don’t know the details either. We had to prepare and come to the capital right away, so there was no time to talk more. Actually, that day, everyone was more interested in discussing who His Grace went to bring rather than his condition.”

“I see.”

A nightmare. And he quickly proceeded with things right after having it.

It certainly seemed suspicious.

“Is that valet in the capital now by any chance?”

“Yes. Are you thinking of meeting him?”

Amy asked quick-wittedly, and Riena silently nodded.

10 minutes later, she met a man who was said to be Cassel’s personal valet in the study. He was a young man in his early 20s, as expressionless and taciturn as Cassel.

Thinking it was a choice very much like Cassel, the valet lowered his eyes and asked.

“Did you call for me, Young Lady?”

“I heard you are in charge of Cass, is that correct?”

“Yes, my name is Chester. I apologize for the late introduction, Young Lady.”

“No. You must be busy taking care of Cass, so you wouldn’t have time to mind me as well.”

Riena offered him a seat, but Chester shook his head, saying he couldn’t do that. Certainly, that kind of principled personality resembled Cassel as well.

“How long have you been in charge of Cass?”

“About 3 years.”

“Not too long then.”

Amy muttered from behind.

“His Grace didn’t like having people around him very much. Chester has lasted a relatively long time because he is taciturn and doesn’t interfere much. In fact, His Grace doesn’t call for him often even so. He usually takes care of most things on his own.”

“So that’s why I haven’t seen much of Chase.”

Nodding her head in understanding, Riena went straight to the point.

“I called you because I wanted to ask what happened before Cass left the ducal territory and came to Viscount Dyke’s territory.”

“……”

“I heard Cass had a nightmare, is that true?”

Instead of answering, Chester glanced at Amy. It seemed like he was reproaching her for telling such a thing, or perhaps seeking permission.

Amy shrugged her shoulders.

“How could I hide it when the Young Lady is asking? And it wasn’t something that needed to be kept secret anyway. Did His Grace issue an order to keep quiet about it?”

“No, but……”

Chester began to speak with a small sigh.

“I’m not sure if His Grace definitely had a nightmare. But around midnight, His Grace, who was in the office, urgently called for me.”

He slowly recalled the memory of that day.

“At that time, His Grace’s face was pale and he was sweating. He couldn’t even breathe properly. I cautiously asked if he had a nightmare, and he didn’t particularly deny it. So I thought he might have had a nightmare.”

If Cassel, who normally didn’t even properly express his own emotions, had shown such a disheveled appearance, it would be natural to assume he had a nightmare.

“And then?”

“And His Grace……”

Chester slightly furrowed his brow. As if he still couldn’t understand it.

“He asked me what exact date it was today. He even asked what year it was according to the imperial calendar.”

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
