Ro was blocked once again. This time, it was right in front of the garden where the ‘most wicked flower’ bloomed. Yet she didn’t receive any particularly suspicious glances, because it was common for nobles strolling through the garden and their attendant servants to be interrupted frequently. The excuse was flawless—preparing a special flower to be unveiled at the banquet. Sure, right. Special to the point of being utterly grotesque. Ro inwardly scoffed.

Anyway, entering the garden immediately seemed difficult. Ro decided to wait until dawn, when the sun had fully set. Since dinner time was already approaching, Ro cleverly slipped into the kitchen by blending in among the maids. Ideally, she should have sent Anna, but given the circumstances, it seemed better that she go herself.

“Pretty sister, could I have a little more stew?”

“Goodness.”

The maid distributing food gave a disdainful snort at her cheekiness, yet still added an extra ladle. Freshly baked bread came as a bonus. Ro grinned and firmly grabbed an apple as well. This role suited her far better than playing the ‘young lady.’

She also noticed that several of the maids appeared visibly unwell. They wandered about like ghosts, dazed and vacant. Likely, they had been exposed to the flower’s poison for too long.

But it seemed she was the only one who cared. Ro couldn’t be sure whether the flower’s toxin was somehow affecting even those who seemed perfectly fine, or whether maids walking around like specters were simply common due to overwork.

“Anna. I’m here.”

When she knocked, she heard the sound of a lock being undone from inside. Anna opened the door with a blank expression.

“No trouble, I hope?”

“No… I kept the door locked, just as you instructed.”

“Good. Let’s eat first. We’ll need full stomachs before tackling big tasks.”

Ro placed the tray on the table and pulled her chair close. The food, though meant for servants, was delicious and plentiful—more than enough for two. Even Anna, who had been dazed throughout, seemed to regain some energy after eating.

Eventually, the sun fully set. Ro promptly checked the oil in her lantern and placed it inside her small bag along with a pouch of powder. She didn’t forget to bring her knife.
