Viare hurried back to the Ruschef ducal estate and quietly passed through the corridor the maid had earlier told her about.

Perhaps because it was the height of the busy evening hour, just as the maid had said, no servants could be seen in the passage.

Hastening her steps, Viare returned to her room and changed into an indoor dress with the help of her waiting maid.

Just as she let out a sigh of relief, thinking no one had noticed her outing, someone knocked on the door three times.

“Come in.”

“My lady, His Grace the Duke has returned. It will soon be dinner time—shall I call the other maids?”

Her hair, disheveled from her hurried return, must have looked messy.

Embarrassed, Viare scratched her cheek with one hand and nodded, and soon the maids entered to assist her with her attire once more.

When she finally descended to the dining room after completing her toilette, the Duke and Gaisen were already waiting for her.

Fifteen-year-old Gaisen bore no trace of a fully grown man—his face was that of a fresh, youthful boy.

At the sight, a soft chuckle escaped Viare’s lips.

‘He seemed rather cute back then.’

As if hearing her laughter, her father turned his head and greeted Viare warmly.

“Come, take your seat, Viah.”

“Yes, Father.”

Clearly, the two had been engaged in conversation, yet for some reason, the moment she appeared, their discussion seemed to vanish as though it had never occurred.

Worried her father might have scolded her younger brother, Viare cautiously glanced his way—but thankfully, Gaisen appeared perfectly unbothered.

Delicately carved from natural marble, the long table was laden with delicious-looking dishes.

“Thank you for allowing us another delicious meal today. May the House of Ruschef forever remain under the grace of Lord Ecarto.”

As always, the three joined hands, closed their eyes, and offered a prayer.

Viare merely sipped at her warmed soup, leaving the rest of the food untouched.

Questions about the passing of Marquis Verdeum swirled ceaselessly in her mind, but she knew her father would hardly give her a straightforward answer.

“Viah, is the food not to your liking?”

The Duke looked at his daughter with concern, and Viare gave a slight shake of her head in reply.

“No, it’s just that my head feels a bit dizzy.”

“Oh dear. Shall I send for the physician?”

“I’ll be fine after a short rest.”

At that, the Duke gave a brief nod, then quickly shifted his gaze toward his son—who bore a striking resemblance to his own heir apparent.

“This boy eats so well, I suppose there’s no need to worry about him.”

Though his words suggested nonchalance, his eyes brimmed with affection for his son.

Viare stole a quick glance at her younger brother before turning away and agreeing with the Duke.

“That’s true.”

Hearing this, Gaisen scrunched his face slightly, his cheeks flushed, and muttered under his breath.

“Everyone eats this much, you know.”

Gaisen’s jet-black hair often reminded her of their mother.

Though still at an age where he dearly needed a mother’s touch, he never once showed sorrow—fearing perhaps that Viare or the Duke might grieve—and so concealed his feelings deeply. Such was Gaisen Ruschef.

He would sometimes grumble about the charity balls and social gatherings hosted by the ducal house, yet in the end, he always participated more eagerly than anyone else.

Viare was only concerned that around this time, Gaisen seemed to speak far less than usual.

When he was young, her little brother had been simply adorable, but ever since turning fifteen, she began to sense a growing distance between them.

Some children became sharply sensitive during adolescence due to physical and hormonal changes—Gaisen seemed to belong to that group.

She had believed that once this phase passed, he would eventually return to his former self, yet seeing how he had changed left Viare quietly disappointed.

Even so, she had no intention of forcing their estranged relationship back into closeness.

She well understood that no bond could be maintained through sheer will or desire alone.

Viare still wished to be a steadfast pillar for Gaisen, as she once had been.

She would simply strengthen his standing behind the scenes, ensuring he never found himself in awkward situations—without him ever knowing.

‘No one can remain detached at first.’

She only hoped her brother would never be wounded by petty judgments or humiliation.

In the end, Viare returned to her bedroom before finishing her meal, using a headache as her excuse.

With the help of her dressing maid, she changed into a chemise and dismissed everyone to clear her mind, remaining alone in her room.

Having already informed them she would skip dinner, she expected not to leave her chamber for the rest of the day.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Still suffering faint remnants of her headache from the “Eye of Truth,” Viare opened the window.

The gentle breeze blowing in from afar seemed to refresh her thoughts considerably.

Had her personal maid Manolin seen her like this, she surely would have scolded her for risking a chill—but Manolin was away temporarily for a short rest.

The view from Viare’s window overlooked a seldom-traveled path, making it ideal for sorting through her thoughts alone.

She sat idly by the windowsill, gazing only at the grand oak tree.

It was the very same tree she had stared at daily during the past year before returning to the past, yet Viare never tired of looking at it.

Now, personally checking on the oak’s condition had become part of her daily routine.

Of course, Viare hadn’t always occupied this room.

Her original chamber, situated in the sunniest spot of the ducal manor, had been lovingly prepared by the Duke and Duchess themselves long before Viare’s birth.

Despite the room’s abundant affection, young Viare had insisted on moving simply because she wished to be closer to the large, majestic tree.

The Duke had been reluctant to let her abandon what was clearly the finest room in the house.

But when his usually composed daughter threw a rare fit, the Duke and Duchess reluctantly agreed to the change—and Gaisen, who had been waiting for just such an opportunity, quickly claimed her former room.

Back then, the Duke would often threaten four-year-old Gaisen, saying he’d be moved back if he kept causing trouble.

Remembering those peaceful days brought a faint smile to Viare’s lips.

Just then, three knocks sounded at the door, and Viare rose from her spot on the windowsill.

Standing outside was the steward she’d given a task to before heading to the dining room.

He handed her a vial filled with dried Densipholia leaves, having clearly carried out her order well.

Seated at her mahogany desk, Viare idly fiddled with the dried Densipholia leaves from the vial.

The more she thought of Dension, the more painfully she missed him.

“Sion, what should I do now?”

She had returned to the past to save him, yet as sixteen-year-old Viare, her actions were severely restricted.

Until she came of age, she was required to take three knight-guards whenever leaving the estate, and outings were forbidden unless for social events.

She didn’t wish to place Dension in an awkward position for her own selfish desires.

Yet she couldn’t simply wait idly until she turned eighteen—so she let out a deep sigh.

Without even the dried Densipholia leaves before her, she feared his presence might vanish from her life forever.

“I hope you can finally find happiness now.”

‘I’ll make sure of it.’

It didn’t matter if she could never see him again.

All she desperately wished was that he wouldn’t meet the same tragic end as in her previous life.

Naturally, Dension had no memory of the current Viare.

If she sought him out now and embraced him warmly, wouldn’t he recoil in discomfort, wondering why some strange woman accosted him in broad daylight?

Shaking her head at such absurd imaginings, Viare reflected quietly.

Thinking back, her first encounter with Dension had been nothing short of disastrous—it was hardly something she could claim had been wonderful even if she staked her entire being on it.

She never could have predicted she’d come to care for him so deeply. Closing her eyes tightly, Viare recalled their very first meeting.

[This is the timeline separator]

She first met Dension on the day the ducal house held a grand ball to celebrate Viare’s seventeenth birthday.

Having made her debut as a debutante at sixteen, this was Viare’s first birthday coinciding with the autumn social season, drawing many noble scions from across the realm to the capital.

It was said the Duke had signed several blank checks for this event’s budget—as if determined to make the Ruschef family’s wealth utterly incomprehensible.

He flaunted his fortune in this manner because, although the House of Ruschef ranked among the empire’s wealthiest families, its noble lineage was not particularly ancient.

The first Ruschef family had been commoners who built their fortune running the capital’s largest trading company. They earned a countship by presenting immense wealth and counsel to the Imperial Court.

Though lower in rank than high nobles, they had secured their place as the empire’s wealthiest and most court-connected central nobility.

But the Ruschef family did not stop at a mere countship.

Several generations ago, one of Viare’s ancestors seized an opportunity and, through distinguished service, was ultimately elevated to the rank of duke.

At the time, the Empire of Marta was locked in a prolonged war over the golden lands of Haelon, suffering severe difficulties in supplying food and equipment.

Neighboring nations, wary of provoking the belligerents, offered no assistance—choosing only to watch from the sidelines.

It was then that the Ruschef Counts, leveraging their trading network’s foreign connections, secured war supplies and helped the Imperial Court achieve victory.

In recognition of this extraordinary contribution, the Ruschef Counts were swiftly elevated to the highest noble rank: duke.

Yet despite their immense contributions, there remained those who still looked down upon the Ruschef name.

Old aristocratic families strongly resented that a lineage descended from lowly merchants now bore such exalted titles.

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
