The drizzle that began in the late dawn kept pattering intermittently until morning, when it finally thickened into heavy rain.

Just as gloomy as the overcast sky—whose rain showed no sign of letting up—the dining room remained steeped in a bleak atmosphere.

Unable to bear the unfamiliar tension any longer, the Duke let out a heavy sigh, shattering the heavy silence.

“Did you two happen to quarrel or something?”

Gaisen merely stared at the plate before him, silently slicing his meat, refusing to utter a single word.

Viare, too, unusually silent, fiddled only with her teacup, offering no reply.

Though the Duke typically refrained from interfering in his children’s affairs, watching them now clearly stirred growing concern within him.

It was especially difficult to grasp the full details, as the incident had occurred precisely during his absence from the ducal estate.

Although the siblings rarely expressed themselves openly to one another, the Duke well knew they cherished each other more deeply than anyone else.

Seeing them at odds was so unprecedented that even he appeared visibly bewildied.

Had they been younger, he would have stepped in directly to reconcile them—but they were no longer children who would heed his words so easily.

“Gaisen, you may take the day off from the trade guild.”

“Just like that?”

“You worked hard in my stead yesterday, didn’t you?”

As he spoke, the Duke deliberately squinted one eye while gazing at his son—an expression that made Gaisen frown as if he’d just witnessed something unbearable.

Though he could not intervene directly, he would at least create an opportunity for them to talk.

That was the parenting wisdom he’d learned through years of being their father.

Only after Gaisen reluctantly nodded did the Duke finally relax, a satisfied smile gracing his lips.

Their awkward breakfast concluded, and Viare slowly ascended the stairs to her room.

Though it was the same staircase she walked every day, she felt so drained that the steps seemed far more numerous than usual.

Collapsing onto her bed the moment she entered, Viare winced at the throbbing headache tightening her brow.

Maintaining composure at breakfast, pretending nothing was amiss, had been no easy feat.

Her every nerve had been fixed on Gaisen, rendering her unusually sensitive.

Only when she pulled the blanket completely over her face, plunging her vision into darkness, did she finally feel a measure of relief.

After returning to the ducal estate in the carriage Gaisen had arranged for her last night, she had sat numbly on her bed like a woman in shock.

Her hands still trembled uncontrollably—not just cold, but icy—from the lingering trauma she couldn’t shake.

She feared that opening and closing her eyes would replay the horrifying scene from last night.

The image of blood splattered everywhere, soaking the floor, made her curl inward even more tightly.

Her younger brother had killed someone last night—with a calmness that suggested familiarity.

The more she recalled it, the sharper and more vivid that memory grew.

All Viare could do was seek atonement for the blood spilled.

There were so many things she hadn’t asked or confirmed with her brother about last night’s events.

In her state of shock, nothing had been properly resolved.

She never even reached Bernaud No. 34, her original destination—instead, she returned burdened by yet another weight.

Remembering his unwavering, brutal actions made her stomach churn violently.

The blood splashing before her eyes still haunted her vision, constantly superimposed onto Gaisen’s face.

She had to uncover how Gaisen’s hands came to be stained with blood—and what had truly transpired all this time.

First, she carefully reflected on Gaisen’s words that had been echoing in her mind.

[“…Then if not me, who else would do it?”] [“Why can’t you understand? You’re not supposed to do that to me, Sister!”]

‘So I’m the one who doesn’t understand…’

“What exactly are you hiding from me?”

At dawn the previous day, she’d heard a door closing down the corridor—an unmistakable sign that Gaisen had returned.

She’d briefly considered seeking him out, pressing him for answers—but by then, she’d already abandoned any hope that he’d fully confide in her.

She told herself he, too, needed time to sort through his thoughts—so she’d wait just a little longer and observe.

‘What would Mother have done in a moment like this…?’

After the Duchess’s death, the ducal estate had been swallowed by grief, and every servant sighed or shed tears whenever passing her chamber.

Gaisen, having lost his mother at such a young age, had done nothing but cry each day.

Viare had tightly held her brother’s hand, leading him through every corner of the estate.

One day the garden, the next the hill behind the manor—and once, they even sneaked out through a hole in the wall.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

She feared her little brother, drowning in sorrow and emptiness just as their father was, might lose his way.

Though she herself couldn’t fully let go of that grief, she dared not show tears in front of them.

Because she felt she had no right to.

Caring for her younger brother had always felt overwhelming—but Viare believed she’d do anything if only to see Gaisen smile again.

Even if she could never replace their mother, she could still say she’d done her utmost back then.

That was why, the moment she glimpsed a side of her brother she’d never known—contrary to the image of someone always under her protection—her heart shattered into indescribable despair.

She was terrified she might have ruined him.

Should their mother be watching now, Viare had no confidence she’d be granted forgiveness.

Viare splashed cold water on her face, then took a slow, deep breath before exhaling steadily.

With trembling hands, she opened the door and stepped forward, one foot at a time.

Of the many rooms along the long corridor, only she and Gaisen currently occupied this floor.

Her heels echoed down the hallway, until the sound gradually faded into stillness.

Knock knock—

After tapping twice, Viare spoke through the tightly closed door, her voice hushed and strained.

“It’s me, Gaisen.”

After a long pause, his voice finally came—faint and unmistakably trembling.

“Come in, Sister.”

Though she’d visited this room countless times over the years, stepping into Gaisen’s current chamber now felt strangely awkward.

The atmosphere was utterly unlike his childhood room, and Viare swallowed hard as she glanced around.

On the long embroidered tablecloth sat the chessboard he’d loved since boyhood, and a small frame held a family portrait.

That was the only trace of his youth left in the room.

Despite being known as a well-lit chamber, heavy curtains now veiled every window, plunging the space into darkness—

as if trying to bury his wounds along with the shadows.

“Tell me you’re not… hurt or anything?”

At her words, Gaisen’s shoulders gave a slight tremor, and he replied with forced calm.

“It was just a glancing blow. This much is nothing.”

Viare had dismissed his recent habits—wearing only black, speaking less—as mere adolescent affectation, nothing worth worrying over.

But now, seeing clearly what she’d brushed past before, she could only let out a quiet sigh.

She sensed things were spiraling worse by the moment—and had no idea whether she could possibly stop it.

“Gaisen, I’ve spent all day turning your words over in my mind.”

“…”

She now understood with painful clarity just how ignorant and pitiful she’d been.

“But no matter how much I think about it, I still can’t fully understand what you meant.”

“…”

All she could sense beneath his words was suppressed grievance and resentment.

Unable to protect her brother any longer, Viare added in a voice steeped in despair.

“Is it something you truly can’t explain to me? Please, just this once.”

“Sister…”

Gaisen’s eyes wavered helplessly with emotion, and she could only stare into the depths of his crimson irises, now clouded and sunken.

After a moment of hesitation, he set his jaw with resolve and shook his head.

“There’s nothing I can tell you. I’m sorry.”

His firm refusal to offer her any explanation left Viare utterly crushed.

She’d expected he wouldn’t speak easily—but facing this reality still felt as if her heart were being torn apart.

“This is all to protect you. So please… can’t you just leave me alone?”

Gaisen’s voice bordered on pleading, his eyes now brimming with unmistakable anxiety.

“Alright. I won’t ask you for answers right now.”

As she spoke, Viare gently smoothed his disheveled bangs—a gesture followed by words delivered with unusual composure.

“But at least tell me this one thing clearly.”

He looked up at his sister in silence, unable to guess what doubt now troubled her.

Still, his quiet gaze seemed to carry a hint of reluctant assent.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

27/12/2025
Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead is a Divorced Husband

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.

After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.

She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.

But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

――

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!

The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.

That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”

Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”

The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”

That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”

Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”

The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.

Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.

“She was originally a ‘she’!”

At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.

The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
