Thinking that Cyrus was indeed sharp, Ariana replied calmly.

“Must one always suffer before understanding?”

“The princess is far too young to recognize danger before it strikes. The methods I saw you employ in Seoryeong didn’t seem like something developed in just a day or two.”

“But didn’t the Duke of Bukje himself return splendidly at merely fourteen years old?”

“I had many people beside me to help. But the princess is alone.”

“You had the Duke of Bukje’s aid.”

“No. Even without my help, I believe the princess could have escaped that situation on her own.”

Cyrus gently grasped Ariana’s chin between his thumb and forefinger. Ariana lifted her head in response to his touch.

His crimson eyes pierced through her, searching intently. His gaze was so intense it felt almost tangible, as if it were roaming thoroughly inside her body.

His hand was cold, yet for some reason the spot it touched felt hot. As she tried stepping back to avoid his hand, he lowered it first.

“When news reached Bukryeong that my parents had died in battle, I was reading a book in my room at the castle, completely unaware. Do you know who was the first to enter my room?”

“…Who was it?”

“My father’s younger brother—the man I called uncle—tried to smother me with a pillow so he could take the seat of Duke of Bukje.”

It was the first time Cyrus had ever shared his own story.

“Our relationship had always been good—no, exceptionally close. Whenever my parents left the country for war, I regarded him as my own father and followed him faithfully. My parents trusted him so deeply they even told me to rely on him if anything happened.”
