The Emperor issued his decree and left the courtroom with Cyrus.

On the way to the Imperial Palace in the carriage with Cyrus, the Emperor quietly stared at Cyrus seated before him.

Cyrus, who used to hold his mother’s hand and smile brightly and cheerfully, had lost his smile. Anyone could tell that the rare smiles he showed were carefully crafted.

Knowing he himself had played a part in Cyrus’s transformation, guilt welled up in his chest.

Out of suspicion and greed, he had turned away from the late Duke and Duchess of the North, who had supported him wholeheartedly like parents or siblings. He had even driven out Cyrus—their most treasured person—in his attempt to seize the Northern Territory.

Now that time had passed and he had reached an age similar to that of the late Emperor, he keenly realized what he had abandoned and what he had lost due to his own greed.

Because of this guilt, he could not help but grow weak before Cyrus.

Ever since the day Cyrus, who once embraced him with a radiant smile in his youth, had come to him cold and hardened like ice—and even then, knelt before him pledging loyalty—the Emperor had been unable to raise his head before Cyrus.

Cyrus was gazing out the window with those beautiful eyes.

“Has your heart lightened a bit, Cyrus?”

“Thanks to Your Majesty’s concern, I was able to set things right before it was too late.”

“Do you hold feelings for that child?”

“I merely had a slight connection with her, so I couldn’t pretend not to know.”

He answered the questions, yet the Emperor clearly sensed the wall embedded in his voice. Swallowing a sigh, the Emperor spoke.

“You must be disappointed in the Duke of the West over this matter… But someday, when you have children of your own, you’ll understand him. The Duke of the West is only human—he crossed a line because his heart softened over his own child.”
