Rachel whispered to the young maid, who was trembling violently.

“If you want to save your family…”

Though overwhelmed by this sudden turn of events, the maid could not defy the duchess seated so far above her, even as tears streamed down her face.

She was young and had come from the countryside, knowing little of the world—but she understood well enough how much power the duchess before her wielded.

Her parents and siblings back in the village could live or die on nothing more than a gesture from the duchess.

A few hours later, the young maid went to the investigation bureau and knelt before the inspectors, confessing.

“I did it. I killed that man in the pagoda.”

The inspectors watched pityingly as the maid shivered with blue lips, trembling while confessing her crime.

When the chief inspector finally returned after hearing the news late, all he saw was the maid’s corpse—she had drunk poison to atone for her sins with her death.

No one believed the maid’s words, but since she had gone so far as to drink poison while confessing, they could no longer hold Victoria.

Rachel arrived with a gentle smile and took Victoria away.

Even the crowd that had gathered demanding harsh punishment for Victoria and Rachel couldn’t bring themselves to throw stones at the Bronte ducal carriage.

The chief inspector watched the departing carriage with a stern expression.

“If Victoria Bronte had been the daughter of an ordinary family, this much evidence would have been enough to punish her.”

But Victoria was the daughter of a duke and granddaughter of a marquis, so circumstantial evidence alone wasn’t sufficient—they needed an eyewitness.
