Late at night, everything around me was quiet, yet my ears were filled with the loud pounding of my own heartbeat.

Staring up at the dark ceiling, I let out a deep breath.

Pull yourself together, Ariana.

I yanked the blanket sharply and turned onto my side. The vast bed stretched endlessly—even with my arms fully outstretched, I couldn’t reach its edge.

No matter how I shifted position or closed my eyes, my mind refused to quiet down.

With what must have been my hundredth sigh, I curled up tightly. It still felt as though the sensation lingered on my lips.
