“…I thought it was a dream. I never thought I’d see you again in my lifetime.”

Father’s chestnut-brown eyes widened slightly in surprise. Nerea, her voice thick with emotion, added one more sentence.

“It’s been a long time. What brings you here?”

“Your condition seems better than what Brienna described.”

His inspecting gaze, clearly disapproving, irritated her. His intentions were as unreadable as if viewed through frosted glass.

“What did Brienna say about me?”

“Watch your words. That girl isn’t someone you can speak of so casually. She is none other than Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess.”

His rebuke fell like a sharp, icy blade. Though Nerea was clearly his own daughter, his reaction was as furious as if she’d slandered someone precious to him.

Her stomach churned. Simultaneously, she felt nauseated.

“I heard you’d gone mad—raving like a lunatic, saying bizarre things.”

Perhaps it was a side effect of the medicine. After blinking for a moment in silence, Nerea let out a quiet laugh upon hearing her father’s voice. Seeing his eyebrows lift in response, she murmured flatly,

“How else was I supposed to endure it, if not by going mad?”

“…”

“At fifteen, I was sent to the battlefield. By seventeen, I’d survived—but during all that time, my stepmother drugged me, and you simply ignored it all.”

For a split second, Father stared at Nerea with piercing intensity. Nerea’s heartbeat surged wildly; she wondered what he might say next.
