To The Eternal Knight (2 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 3
Nerea gave a soft chuckle. Her heart still hadn’t settled, but she had enough composure left to soothe a crying child.
“You, ungrateful? You came all the way to this rural village of Alfern for my sake—Heather Blanche.”
“It’s Heather Wilkinson, miss.”
She’d never had much talent for it, even back then.
Heather corrected her with a childish sniffle. Ah, right. Nerea chuckled again.
She’d heard dozens of times that Heather’s grandfather’s herbal business had collapsed and that debts forced them to change their surname—but the name etched into Nerea’s mind remained Heather Blanche.
“Miss, do you perhaps remember me? At the border of Osphirn, when you saved our village, I promised I’d repay your kindness someday. I was Heather Blanche—six years ago.”
It was the name the little girl Heather had given, five years ago, when she’d stepped into this house with desperate eyes. And now, that same Heather looked at Nerea with identical eyes.
Unrelenting hope.
“And besides, how can you call Alfern a rural village? It’s part of Count Esteban’s domain, and it’s barely two days’ journey to the capital! Once everyone learns you’re staying here, they’ll all flock over.”
Which was exactly why Nerea had to shatter that precious, futile hope. It hurt too much when hardened hope finally broke—
just as it had for her past self.
“That’s right, Heather. From the capital to Alfern—even if it feels far—it’s only two days by carriage. If someone rode a fast horse without stopping, they’d arrive even sooner.”
At the sudden shift in topic, Heather blinked blankly before her lips parted slightly.
“And besides, the portraits have already been made public ten days ago.”
Nerea spoke slowly, watching Heather instantly grasp what she meant. It was the same phrase she repeated to herself whenever she doubted whether her choice had truly been the best.
“If anyone truly cared, they would’ve looked for news about me—either by asking directly at Count Esteban’s estate or visiting the summer villa in Alfern that my father kept boasting about.”
She tried to inject a laugh, but her voice grew emptier with each word.
“Everyone in the capital knows, Heather. There were grand announcements. That I’ve collapsed and retreated to Alfern for convalescence. Yet look—no one…”
While Nerea briefly bit her lip, Heather shot up, eyes brimming with tears.
“I’m sorry, miss. I’ll—I’ll be right back.”
SLAM—only after the door slammed shut noisily did Nerea mutter,
“No one came. Not a single person came looking for me.”
People only cared to recount how a used-up shield fell—nothing beyond that amused them.
Her mouth tasted bitter; her throat burned. Facing the truth always churned her insides like this.
Out of habit, Nerea reached to tousle her hair, then realized she hadn’t even taken off her hat yet—and smiled faintly. Removing her hat and loosening the pins, her red hair brushed against her nape. After brushing it back a few times, her fingertips trembled.
She hadn’t trembled like this lately. Should she skip training today? She’d only just regained enough control to swing a sword properly again. As she stared blankly at her palm, imprinted with calluses—
Knock knock. A knock sounded at the door.
Nerea quickly composed her face, chuckled softly, and called out,
“Heather, just come in. I don’t lock the door over something like this.”
But the door didn’t open. Rising, Nerea walked toward it and said loudly,
“You won’t let me in until we make up? Then I’ll just have to….”
She stopped mid-sentence.
Standing before the door was—
a man as tall as the door itself, blocking the view of the sunset blazing outside. From his shadowed face, pitch-black eyes gleamed down at her.
At the strange sensation, Nerea met his gaze—and couldn’t breathe.
Eyes so deep and dark, even light couldn’t pierce them. Once, she’d believed no eyes were more familiar to her than these.
“…I’m glad you look well. You must be doing fine.”
His voice—low, bewitching, sending chills down her spine—belonged to a man she didn’t recognize.
“I, however, haven’t been fine—not after being abandoned by my knight.”
She simply watched as his lips twisted fiercely, parting in a vivid red. As emotions slowly surfaced on his previously calm, unreadable eyes, Nerea reached out her hand.
The man leaned his cheek gently onto her palm. The moment she felt that familiar warmth, Nerea pinched his sharp, handsome nose.
“Ah.”
Seeing him let out a soft groan, she smiled faintly.
“…I should’ve recognized you the moment you smiled so mischievously. Your speech picked up some bad habits too, Alejandro.”
Alejandro—her only, little page from long ago. At last, the boy smiled faintly with a face she recognized.
Her throat tightened, stinging at the tip of her nose. Remembering Alejandro’s words, Nerea murmured,
“And don’t say ‘abandoned.’”
You rascal. It felt absurd even to voice it, so Nerea just pinched his nose harder.
Yet Alejandro didn’t even pretend to pull away. Instead, he offered his beautiful face closer, as if inviting her to pinch as much as she liked. His quiet, black eyes followed her with relentless focus.
Trending
His face resembled the one from her dreams so closely that this fully grown man didn’t feel unfamiliar at all. Her heart ached. So she withdrew her hand with a faint smile.
“…If I hadn’t left you behind back then, would you have grown this tall?”
No matter how she thought about it, the answer was “no.” Calmly, she said,
“Probably not. So, Alejandro—you should be grateful I left you behind. Had you come with me, you might still be tiny.”
Ten years ago, on that final day when rain poured like a deluge, Alejandro’s image flashed vividly before her eyes.
If he’d followed her, he might still be small, his cheeks chapped and raw, the kind of child too malnourished to finish even a bowl of thin corn porridge.
He wouldn’t have grown this tall, nor broadened those shoulders.
Yet…
“That was abandonment.”
Had he meant to laugh?
Not with that dry, hollow chuckle—but with his old, bright, crystal-clear laugh from back then.
Biting her lip over that futile hypothetical, her upper lip whitened under the pressure of her teeth. Instinctively, Alejandro reached toward her lips—but hastily lowered his hand.
My hands wouldn’t look pretty in your eyes, knight…
But her perceptive knight had already seen everything.
“You—your hand!”
His watery eyes flickered in alarm. His usually relaxed tone shifted sharply. In that instant, Alejandro abruptly corrected his misunderstanding.
Right. To my knight, these aren’t ugly scars—they’re vulnerable cracks where I can burrow in.
So he subtly extended his hand forward, letting old scars—repeatedly torn and healed—stand out clearly.
“It should’ve been you who raised me, my knight.”
Only now did those watery eyes fully focus on him. Alejandro smiled weakly. Guilt or anything else—none of it mattered anymore.
“What could I possibly do on my own? All I knew was trailing after you, my knight.”
“…”
“So I made sure you couldn’t abandon me—so no one could ever take me away from you again.”
Relentlessly chasing those eyes he’d longed for ten years, Alejandro finally voiced words he’d swallowed for far too long.
“…I’ve come.”
“…”
“Now I’m wealthy, grown, and strong. Perfect as your knight’s page.”
“…”
“So…”
Alejandro calmly gestured toward the cottage interior.
“May I come in?”
.
.
.
The moment he stepped into the lit room, Alejandro reflexively lowered his head—his tall frame nearly brushing against the hanging lamp from the ceiling.
So much for being wealthy, grown, and strong.
Now that she looked closer, his jacket was simple but high quality, and his shoes gleamed with refined polish. Nerea smiled faintly.
Of course. Baron Zenax and his baroness—those kind, warm souls who cherished their second son like treasure—would never let him arrive looking anything less than proper.
Buried yearning surged up in waves. With countless questions weighing on her tongue, Nerea bit her dry lips for a long while. Before she could speak, Alejandro broke the silence.
“Small and lovely, just as you wished…”
As he spoke, his eyes had been scanning the house. Narrowing his elegant eyes slightly, he took in the combined kitchen and parlor area, then carefully chose his next words.
After a few thoughtful pauses, as if searching for the most fitting term, he offered his answer:
“…A country house.”
Nerea smiled a little.
“You could just call it a cottage.”
“But it was you who insisted on ‘country house,’ my knight.”
At the added remark—spoken as if testing her memory—Nerea bit hard on the inside of her cheek, cutting through the swelling memories before hastily changing the subject.
“Anyway, how did you get here?”
Alejandro shrugged, a faint smile spreading across his gentle face.
“By carriage. I still can’t ride a horse alone—maybe because you never taught me how.”

“That’s not it. Did Johann Zenax give you permission? For you to come here?”
Alejandro’s lips curled up slightly.
True—Johann Zenax, the loyal eldest son of the Zenax family and Alejandro’s brother, devoted servant to House Esteban, surely had no idea his younger brother had come here.
…But since he was already here, perhaps it was alright to ask a few things. While her mind clumsily weighed the odds, her lips blurted out the question first:
“…Are Baron Zenax and the baroness well?”
Truthfully, she wanted to ask about the baron’s leg—but fear outweighed her courage.
His screams that day often haunted her nightmares, where he endlessly blamed her, forever unable to walk.
The kind man who’d defended her against her father until the end—only to have his leg broken by another retainer who sided with her father. Was he well? And did his gentle wife perhaps now hate her?
“I suppose so?”
But the reply she received was a question. Alejandro frowned slightly, then raised the corners of his mouth awkwardly.
“My knight, I…”
