“Oh, by the way—did you hear? His Majesty is considering raising the Acting Count to the rank of marquis.”

At Claude’s words, Brienna couldn’t suppress a smile.

A marquisate. Such sweet words. That I would be not the daughter of an Acting Count, but of a marquis.

“Yes, I heard. Mother and I were overjoyed—you can’t imagine how much! Not only is he finally shedding the ‘Acting’ title, but he’s receiving a marquisate on top of it. His Majesty’s grace is overwhelming.”

“His Majesty was quite pleased with how things turned out on the border. I was, too.”

“It seems you truly enjoyed your days out on the frontier.”

Claude let out a quiet laugh.

“Indeed. It would’ve been nice if you’d been there to see it yourself—the cheers of my people for me, and even those faces I rarely get to see, smiling warmly.”

For a fleeting moment, a strange sense of superiority crossed Claude’s handsome face. Brienna knew exactly who that feeling was directed toward—Grand Duke Edward Castarti Valer.

“And of course, Count Esteban—well, the tragic news about your sister… wasn’t entirely unwelcome, either.”

Hearing Claude’s added remark, Brienna stared at him blankly.

It was clear now. Claude and she were alike.
