“I expected something more impressive from you.”

Nerea narrowed her brows as she looked at David Illauser entering the tent behind her.

Among the imperial knights who had come to escort some of the captured ambush squad back to the capital, David Illauser had stayed behind in the tent as though he were part of the rear detachment.

It was hard to believe he’d joined the battle so belatedly—David Illauser had already slipped in seamlessly as Nerea’s aide, speaking to her now with an almost casual ease.

“More impressive words?”

When Nerea frowned, David Illauser raised his palms and spoke.

“You know—the kind of words a commander gives. Like those you delivered at the departure ceremony, or perhaps the ones right before entering Gauwe’s royal palace ten years ago.”

David stared intently at Nerea. Without armor, clad only in her dress uniform, Nerea’s face appeared utterly youthful—so much so that she seemed nearly the same age as the ordinary knights outside.

The meal before Nerea only deepened David’s impression. Soup, bread, and dried meat—despite being a commander, she was eating the same meal as the regular knights.

Even ten or a hundred years ago, during the Hundred Years’ War, the food offered by the servant who so fiercely protected Nerea back then would surely have been better than this—yet Nerea’s expression remained resolute before this humble fare.

Just as it had been ten years ago, when she’d prepared to enter Gauwe’s royal palace.

“Today marks the end of our two-year effort and the final stroke to close the Hundred Years’ War. Everything will be over.”

“Smash the city gates properly—shatter them into pieces.”

“Because each of us will walk out through Gauwe’s gates once again.”

Hearing that clear, low voice echo in his mind, David nearly found himself replying, “Understood.” The unfulfilled order from ten years ago—never answered at the time—kept thrusting David into moments of regret like this.
