Count Rosa’s jeweled chamber.

In a room overlooking the garden, Nerea fixed her gaze through the large window. Beyond the far end of the garden, she could see Count Illautzer standing confrontationally at the main gate, with carriages lined up behind him.

Though distance blurred his features, Nerea could guess the expression on Count Illautzer’s face.

He was probably bewildered—or perhaps furious. Yet one thing was certain: Count Illautzer would never feel sorry toward her.

Nerea remembered clearly the look Count Illautzer had given her in the assembly hall—

That look which seemed to say, “It’s for His Imperial Majesty, so why react so strongly?”

“You’re frowning again.”

Ah. Only when a cautious hand touched her forehead did Nerea realize she wasn’t alone. Simultaneously, Alejandro asked her, sounding slightly hurt,

“What could you possibly be thinking about to wear such a sour expression?”

“…Were you following me in here instead of going to the main gate just to do this?”

Nerea shot him a playful glance. Ever since entering the jeweled chamber, Alejandro had stuck close to her side, as if trying to make up for all the time he’d spent apart from her outside the room.

Standing behind Nerea as if shielding her, Alejandro widened his large eyes into a cheerful smile—his face so stunningly charming it seemed capable of melting anyone on the spot.

But immediately after, he tilted his head innocently and replied,

“Of course not. Father went out to the main gate, so I came in to assist you, my knight. It would be ridiculous for me to follow Father, who’s acting as your retainer.”

He did have a point.
