The palace stairs.

“You must hurry up. If you go up now, the meeting will end before you arrive.”

David repeated his urgent urging—perhaps for the umpteenth time. The piercingly cold moonlight now shone even more faintly than before.

It was deep into the night, far past the hour his father, Count Illautzer, had whispered to him as the meeting’s start time—so far past it that he couldn’t even bear to calculate how much.

The Grand Duke he knew—no, the Emperor now—had surely begun the meeting already. If only those petty nobles would let Count Esteban handle things for them.

“But the carriages haven’t even left yet. And no one’s coming out.”

Yet Nerea’s steps—she who should be rushing ahead of everyone else to assist the Emperor—remained infuriatingly calm. And understandably so.

The clacking sound of her heels ascending the stairs made David want to press his palm to his forehead.

“Changing clothes now? But you’re already in your formal attire.”

“Knight’s formal wear is battlefield attire meant only for ceremonies or battles. Didn’t you know another kind of ‘battle uniform’ is needed for meetings?”

David froze, recalling the sudden outfit change. At the edge of his vision, the sharp, ornate toe of a crimson shoe peeked out beneath a red dress. His eyes drifted upward involuntarily.

Red dress, red shoes, bare white shoulders, slender neck—his gaze finally landed on a face unusually pale and clear, crowned by fiery red hair.

Nerea Esteban looked just like a blazing, brilliant flame—exactly as if she truly wore the “new battle uniform” she claimed.

But only for a moment.

“Look ahead.”
