So, at the moment when I wanted to give up everything, seeing the hope Alejandro had opened up made me realize belatedly: it wasn’t that I wanted to surrender—it was that there was something I wanted to protect.

If I ever became a count, I was determined to change things. Maybe everyone living in that shattered place could finally smile together.

Yet…

Her wish collapsed at the victory banquet, and the hope she had barely gathered ended up harming Baron Zenax.

Even so, she had shamefully taken up her sword again. After running away, claiming she would live alone, she had planned to rise once more by feeding on Heather’s antidote.

Indeed, where had she thought she’d go even if she managed to stand again?

With what thoughts had she picked up her sword again, daring to harbor such radiant expectations?

Nerea left Alejandro’s room, turning back as she reflected. Though her vision blurred, her mind remained clear.

She truly was a loser. Thus, continuing to live like this was right.

Silent as the dead—still, so no one would ever look for her.

After entering her room, Nerea turned off the bedside lamp. When the spreading light vanished, her room became pitch-black, like the maw of a beast. Only once it grew so dark she could see nothing did Nerea open her wardrobe.

The fabric brushing softly against her fingertips felt much gentler than before. And deep within it lay her cold sword.

It was right to lock away her hope before it could harm someone else again.

Nerea bit her lip and closed the wardrobe door. Resolving never to open it again, she blocked it with bundles of newspapers and then leaned against the door farthest from the wardrobe.

Her back felt cold, yet her hips sank into softness. Even in this situation, the rug Alejandro had brought still protected Nerea.
