The nobles gradually came to their senses at Alejandro’s firm demeanor.

Those who had been awkwardly seated on the sofa, as if ready to bolt at any moment, now cleared their throats with awkward coughs. Yet, despite their feigned composure, every one of their legs was pointed toward the door—as though ready to dash out the instant they heard news that the capital had been retaken.

The nobles kept their eyes fixed on Johnny, who alone remained standing instead of leaving.

Though their gazes—clearly demanding more information after he’d delivered news of the Grand Duke’s entry into the capital—should have felt burdensome, Johnny merely gave a faint smile and whispered something quietly into Alejandro’s ear.

What on earth could he have said? The nobles pricked up their ears, straining to catch even a syllable, but not a whisper escaped.

Alejandro’s strikingly elegant eyebrows remained rigid, betraying neither agreement nor denial at Johnny’s words.

Even after Johnny left, Alejandro simply gazed out toward the garden as if nothing of importance had occurred, prompting the nobles to each tense up and peer anxiously outside.

Amidst this tension, a presence approached Alejandro and spoke.

“I thought you, Count, would be the first to rush out.”

It was Count Illautzer. The old man, whose face had instantly brightened upon hearing the news, now spoke in a sharp voice, having shed all traces of his earlier defeated air.

Alejandro gave a slight, dismissive nod and murmured dryly,

“If they’re doing something big, popping champagne before seeing it through would just let all the fizz out.”

Count Illautzer laughed in admiration—but Alejandro couldn’t bring himself to join in.

He was, after all, the one person in this room who most desperately wanted to bolt—but was forcing himself to maintain an impassive expression instead.

At last—the capital had been entered.
