“…Is the room’s soundproofing coming along well?”

A familiar voice echoed again through the thick darkness. Gabe Esteban forcibly suppressed his startled heart and slowly opened his eyes just a slit.

It was so dark he couldn’t see anything clearly. He tried to move, but his limbs were bound tightly to a chair, rendering him completely immobile.

What is this?

He clearly remembered confessing everything to the Emperor, then being covered again with a sack-like cloth in the palace and shoved into a carriage. After that, he’d descended countless steps… and then….

It came back to him.

Alejandro Rosa. That man had come, forced him into this chair, and stared at him with those unnervingly pitch-black eyes. He’d fainted and awakened so many times he’d lost count.

Driven by instinctive fear, Gabe struggled to assess the situation through half-open eyes. But all around him remained pitch black, and the only thing audible was an unfamiliar voice.

“The soundproofing is perfect. However, the walls will need three more coats to achieve the shade of red you desire, so I’ve reordered the dye. Also, this one—he’s opened his eyes.”

Suddenly, a bright light flared directly in front of him. For a moment, his heart nearly leapt out of his chest—but then, in the abruptly widened field of vision, an unbearably beautiful face loomed close.

“Indeed.”

Dazed, Gabe stared blankly at the gently smiling face—until he suddenly realized it was Alejandro Rosa. He jolted in terror and tried desperately to jerk his body backward.

But it was useless.

Trapped firmly in the chair, Gabe faced that terror head-on and gasped for breath.

“This—what is this…! You just needed me to speak properly to His Imperial Majesty…!”
