“What are you talking about? How could Father possibly attack the Valer Domain?”

Brienna asked, barely able to speak through her fear.

Late at night, she had clearly contacted the Crown Prince’s quarters, and Claude had said he was attending a noble assembly to hold Nerea and the Grand Duke accountable for their crimes.

How overjoyed Brienna had been upon hearing that! She had believed that once the Grand Duke was sent back to Valer and Nerea was placed there with him, Claude would surely return to his former self. So why was her father here now?

“Do you really know nothing at all?”

Claude’s voice, raised in agitation, rang painfully in her ears. Brienna involuntarily winced, but Claude, as if indifferent, pulled his hand away from her shoulder.

The maids, who moments ago had clung anxiously to the Crown Prince’s arm, fearing he might lunge at the pregnant Crown Princess, now tumbled to the floor like late-autumn leaves.

Yet Claude, as though he didn’t even see them, laughed aloud, clutching his waist.

Claude gave a chilling smile as he stared at Brienna. For a moment, her heart felt frozen solid. He was her own father—how could Claude say such terrifying things right before her very eyes?

No. A man with eyes like that seemed capable of harming not only her father, but Brienna herself. The Crown Prince had already directed murderous intent toward her more than once.

Instinctively, Brienna wrapped her arms around her belly. Right now, the only thing that could protect her was the life growing inside her.
