The man gazed silently down at Aline for a moment before shifting his gaze to the baby crib partially obscured by cloth.

Though an immeasurably long time had passed, the crib had barely aged at all—it remained almost exactly as it had been.

Seeing it brought old memories rushing back to the surface like a sudden dive into water. He could almost hear the voice of the beautiful woman with thick, golden hair like flowing honey.

— “Look, let’s make a hole shaped like a dove here. Doesn’t that seem adorable? It’ll bring sweet dreams to the baby.”

Three small bird-shaped holes were pierced into the gently curved headboard of the crib, rounded like a crescent moon.

The man ran his finger along the edge of one of the holes. He vividly recalled smoothing the edges with a rough, flat stone to ensure no splinters remained.

“Auntie.”

At the tug on his collar and the voice, he looked down.

“There was a baby.”

When he answered, Aline turned to look at the empty crib and tilted her head in confusion.

“Where did it go?”

He thought of the child—the last witch born in this house—a girl who had grown up with black hair inherited from her mother, crimson eyes, and only a fragment of a lullaby echoing faintly in her memory.

“She grew up and left home.”

“So she won’t come back anymore?”

“I don’t know.”
