“It’s beautiful.”

Laila replied.

“But what kind of tree is it?”

“It’s a pomegranate tree, Your Majesty.”

The young woman, who appeared to be the owner, answered shyly in Eustar’s stead, her cheeks flushed.

“It brings good luck.”

Laila watched her face for a moment, then gave a gentle smile. The belief that pomegranate trees brought fortune and warded off evil was widely held in Searrow’s capital and surrounding regions.

Laila recalled seeing pomegranate trees planted everywhere during the time Sink had been devouring this country. She remembered feeling deeply melancholic and hollow when she saw one standing alone in the middle of a desolate, empty lot.

But not now, Laila thought. In just a few years, Searrow had grown so lively and bright that it was almost unbelievable to witness.

“Do you want to have one, Eustar?”

At Laila’s question, Eustar glanced at her.

There were many pomegranate trees in the Searrow Palace as well.

Yet Laila could tell Eustar particularly wished to have this tree. Perhaps he was thinking of the children she had not yet borne—maybe he wanted to plant a new tree for them.

‘It was the same with Aline,’ Laila thought. ‘When Aline was born, we planted a scholar tree. Because it was precious.’

“I’d like to buy this tree.”
