Od asked in a lifeless voice. Baso, who had been carefully stacking the gifts on a small side table, turned to look at him with eyes faintly filled with pity.

“His Highness the Crown Prince has left to attend to matters concerning Tentinella, Your Majesty.”

“I see…”

The glimmer that had briefly returned to Od’s eyes clouded over once more. He looked utterly exhausted and pained, as if even breathing required unbearable effort. There was no trace left of the man who had stood in the banquet hall just hours earlier—so much so that one might have suspected someone else had briefly worn Od’s skin.

“Put those away for now, Baso.”

Od spoke with his eyes closed. Baso, who had been about to place the last gift atop the pile, glanced at him and instead began carefully removing each item one by one, restoring them to their original order. Then he summoned the attendants and had them carry all the gifts to another room.

“You may go as well.”

Without a word of protest, Baso faithfully obeyed his command. As always, he lowered the canopy drapes to shield the bed, meticulously closed the curtains to block even the faintest sliver of sunlight from the window, and then quietly slipped out of the room without a sound.

When the door clicked shut, Od opened his eyes. Though he still lacked the strength to lift his head, a sharp gleam flickered in his bloodshot eyes.

He was thinking of Baso.
