Fin’s mother, who had rushed over upon receiving word from the knights, was barely in her right mind from the moment she entered the branch.

“Fin! My son, our boy! Fin! Where are you? Mama’s here, Fin!”

The child, who had seemed calmed after drinking warm chocolate, started wailing again as soon as he saw his mother, as if scalded by fire.

His mother, too, mumbled unintelligible words and planted frantic, breath-stealing kisses all over her son’s flushed face.

Eustar watched the mother and child with a strangely heavy heart. He couldn’t explain why, but returning the boy safely to his family felt far more rewarding than usual.

“That was touching.”

Laila turned toward him at his words. Unlike Eustar, she looked oddly distant.

Just moments ago, while sitting beside Fin and teaching him cat’s cradle, she had seemed like a caring older sister or mother—but now she wore the detached expression of someone looking at a complete stranger.

“I don’t really understand it.”

Eustar looked down at Laila.

“You’re not happy?”

Laila shook her head.

“No, it’s not that. Of course I’m happy—it’s a relief. But… you just called it touching. That’s what I don’t quite grasp.”

Eustar sensed she felt out of place in this atmosphere. Even when Fin’s mother tearfully thanked them, Laila had stood quietly at a distance, as if entirely uninvolved.

After Fin’s family left for home, Eustar and Laila headed toward the branch’s lodging ahead of the others. Eustar worried that Laila suddenly seemed drained, but she kept insisting she was fine.
