The two entered the outskirts of Hoyehis. Laila absentmindedly fiddled with the badge pinned to her chest as she stared blankly at the desolate landscape.

Eustar responded to her words indifferently.

“You’d have thought the same thing even if we’d gone that way, Laila.”

But he understood why she said it. Only the rooftops and windows near the village entrance were visible, yet nothing about them failed to unsettle.

“The houses are relatively intact. It looks like it’s been deserted for at least ten years.”

Laila agreed with him.
