Eustar stood there for a long while, even after confirming that Melly had gone outside. He was suspicious—perhaps she might secretly slip back in to eavesdrop.

Fortunately, Melly was a sensible person. Convinced she wouldn’t eavesdrop or spy on what happened inside the room, Eustar pushed open Laila’s bedroom door without even knocking and stepped in.

“Who’s this?”

That voice was incomparable to anything else—extremely alluring, yet simultaneously rough, with a primal ferocity bristling beneath. It sounded like both the growl of a beast and the sweet whisper of an opera singer.

Eustar glared at Deceptor’s face, which had turned toward him, then shifted his gaze to Laila. She wasn’t under any obvious threat, but her rigid, frozen expression spoke volumes.

“Are you alright, Laila?”

His voice was gentle, though sharper than usual.

But the cause wasn’t Laila herself… Laila exhaled a long, sharp breath, as if surfacing from deep water, then nodded.

“I’m fine.”

At that, Deceptor cried out gleefully.

“Of course you’re fine! What on earth could possibly go wrong? Did you really think I’d chew up this little witch down to the bone?”

“If anyone could, it’d be you.”

At Eustar’s low remark, Deceptor’s lips stretched into a wide, unnatural grin.

His crooked lips, like those of a poorly painted clown, shimmered with an eerie, oily hue, while his jet-black hair surged upward like flames from a bonfire.
