Manson hated the times when he called her. Whenever he said, “Come closer,” she wanted to run away.

But from the monster’s clutches, you couldn’t run away—that’s what Lilin thought. Trying to flee recklessly might lead to disaster. After all, she knew the monster well enough for that. When a mouse and a human live under the same roof, they eventually learn to understand each other.

Lilin stopped her feet precisely where Manson had told her to.

To avoid being swatted away by his terrifying, lumpish hands—like poorly sliced bread—she had to intuitively grasp and obey his unspoken rules. One of them was never to move even a single step from the spot where Manson said “stand.”

For a while, Manson left Lilin standing there in silence, merely staring slowly up and down her body with wide-open eyes.

He stared at the girl’s hair, her forehead—always bearing red, round marks from leaning against windows—her small nose, eyes, cheeks, neck, and limbs as frail as a fawn’s.

—Daddy!

When Manson roughly grabbed Lilin, her unkempt hair swung violently.

Terrified, Lilin thrashed about as if struggling, wildly kicking Manson’s legs. But just like her mother, he didn’t budge at all. Instead, it felt as though she’d kicked a tree trunk—only her own foot ached.

—Don’t do this, Daddy!

—Be quiet! If you don’t stay still, your ears might get cut off.

Ears? Would only her ears be cut off? Maybe her head would be severed too, Lilin thought.

For an instant, she saw the glint of a blade flashing in her terror-filled eyes. On his face—always unpleasant like a drunkard’s, though Manson always looked that way—anger, contempt, disgust, and greed swam together.
