“Where are you?”

Laila opened yet another door, its number now impossible to recall, and scanned the room.

It was nearly identical in layout to the one she’d just checked: a bed, a wardrobe, a dresser, and a nightstand. The only difference was a large framed picture hanging beside the bed—a sheep with three horns sticking out, its tongue stretched long.

“Where are you hiding?”

Laila snapped, throwing open the wardrobe doors and lifting the bedsheet dangling below, but as always, the room was empty. Only her furious, exhausted voice echoed emptily through the hollow space.

“Is this your rule?”

As Laila shouted, a giggle drifted from somewhere in the air—like tiny claws gently scratching a wound with delight.

Don’t lose your temper. Laila took a slow, deep breath. Losing control would mean playing right into its hands.

But I’m already being played, Laila thought. Or was it a thought? Or someone else’s voice? She could no longer tell, nor did she care to distinguish anymore.

So what if I can’t? Perhaps she’d be doomed to open wardrobes forever in this incomprehensible place, unable to find a single child, until she turned into nothing but bones.

Maybe that would actually bring relief……

“No!”

Laila slapped her own cheek hard, forcing strength back into her weakening fingertips.

Her pale cheeks were already swollen red from repeating this gesture so many times—bruised as if struck repeatedly by someone with a cruel habit.

This time, she must have hit herself too hard; a sticky, metallic taste oozed from the corner of her lip. She clenched and unclenched her fist to test her mobility, then wiped her mouth with the back of her hand before stepping into the hallway.
